Good question, sounds like there are many answers. I did things the way my mentor wanted me to do just to keep him quite. Do it his way, then when you get off his truck you can shut him the Number 1 salute when you see him after you go solo.

As far as home sick. I try to call friends and relatives as often as possible. I try to get away from my mentor as much as possible. I am a loner and really don't like being with someone else anyway, so I did not get as home sick as some.

I use to complain about this until I caught myself doing it to a truck the other day in my car. lol. Like someone else said its just not something you think about when driving a car.

Okay, here's the right answer: While you're on your mentor's truck, do it his way. When you do your road test, do it your mentor's way. Once you're in your own truck, do what you feel is the safest course of action.

Keep in mind that whatever you do, you must be able to answer one question if something goes wrong: What did you do to prevent the incident? "Nothing" is never the right answer. Sometimes, "Maintained my speed and lane position" is the right answer.

Lane change is one of the most common types of crashes and is almost always preventable. If you are the one moving from one lane to another and a crash happens, I can guarantee 98% of the time, it will be your fault, even if you think you were doing the safest thing.

Your mentor is teaching you to stay right as much as you can. That's his job. Your governed speed does not justify you being elsewhere in most cases anyway. Traffic entering a freeway, expressway, tollway or any other "way" that has git ons and git offs must yield to traffic already on the road. This is the case in all states you will drive in.

If someone is trying to "make" you cede the lane because they are trying to "merge," remember that he who has the most lug nuts wins. That's not to say you should never be courteous when it's safe to do so, but when it's not, simply go on about your business and let them honk and wave the bird at you as they teara** around you. It's just a hand gesture designed to incite anger or controversy. It's up to you to decide whether it will or not.

I always get out of the right lane well before approaching an on ramp . But then , I have a truck capable of going the speed limit .
It's true to many people don't know how to merge . Most of the time they'd be o.k. if they'd be doing the speed limit or slightly more at the end of the ramp . Too many slow down and expect to be able to pull into traffic going only 40 m.p.h. .
