Talking to folks....Hiring is still tight....IF you go to a good school, have a good work history, and a clean driving record...folks get jobs pretty quick...IMO if a school does not warn you if you have anything but the above, they are taking your money and running...many drivers with lots of experience cannot find work...
The bottom feeder company's get paid a fee by the government for training new drivers...their entire business model is to get student drivers cheap...run them for a year or so cheap...treat them like crap, and get then to quit..then get new person to replace them...and get more $$$ for "training a new driver"...there is a shortage of drivers you know...according to companies...problem is experienced drivers are having trouble getting jobs...HMMMMmm
I bet 75% of the folks in the classes are paid for by grant money....
Many trucking companys do training for CDL's...Free if you sat a year...$5000 cash...but like $10,000 or so if you leave early....so to charge 10,000 for school outright...makes no sense!!

For clarification sake: NO ONE will train you for free.
That is all. -
Mr. ZippyWannabeNHwith16posts: how about you get some real facts before regurgitating misinformation garnered from big company haters because you think it makes you sound cool? If you are referring to companies like Swift, here are the real facts:
The school costs $3,900 whether you work for Swift or not. If you choose not to, it is due upon completion of the school. If you choose to work for Swift, you will pay $75/wk for 13 months, which will completely pay it off. During this time, Swift is reimbursing $37.50/wk. At the end of that 13 months, you have actually split the cost, interest free, with Swift. If you remain employed with Swift for another 13 months, Swift will stop your payments, but will continue reimbursements of 37.50/wk. At the end of that second 13 months, you will have paid nothing for the school because Swift gave it all back to you.
I can't speak for other companies, but I would imagine they have similar programs.
And, further, what do you care whether the company gets government money to train people? Haven't you ever taken classes under Pell grant or student loans? Where do you think that comes from?
As to your statement about companies trying to get rid of people after a year, that just doesn't make sense. It costs more money to train someone than to retain someone. Will you get the boot for accidents, service failures and log violations? Absolutely. I have yet to see an honest-to-goodness case of Swift firing someone for no reason or just because they've been with the company for a year or two. People who say they were fired for being there too long probably went off on the office staff once too often or kept having other problems. They just don't want to admit they messed up.
You don't sound cool. You sound uninformed and closed minded. -
Just to let you guys know. I live in Mass and it is next to impossible to get a job out of school around here. The insurance regulations won't allow new drivers. The rates are too prohibative. They all want 1-2 years of OTR.
That is why I'm going w/ a national carrier. 0 out of pocket, OTR for a year or two, see the country and get my experiance, then come home to a local or regional gig. -
oh yeah, never mind the students "don't sound like they want to commit"......the salesmen GET THEM to commit, by (basically) telling the student anything he wants to hear.......!!!!!!!Last edited: Sep 13, 2010

if you cannot speak with Mark, then ask for his number one junk yard dog,
Mr. Jim M...(yes, a real name/person), tell him your problem, and i'd say that with-in a short time, he will be there (he has a fast car and drives fast) and you, the director, and Jim, will be "talking" about your problems. Jim likes to chew out people (the employee's, never a student), and i can guarantee you, your problems will be solved...!!!!!!!! how he solves them will be NO CONCERN of yours after that.............trust me......!!!!!Last edited by a moderator: Sep 13, 2010
