That's the way I understood it too but I always wonder every time I read through these posts it goes back and forth and makes me wonder. Probably should just quit reading these types of posts lol

I posted a link, and someone else posted the full text to the guidance. It's not a long read.... The problem is when people try and shoehorn something not specifically covered in the guidance because they feel entitled to break HOS for reasons. As for your usage, it's black and white allowed. No interpretation or shoehorning needed. Here is the text and I'll highlight in red the relevant portions.
Examples of Appropriate Uses of a CMV While Off-duty for Personal Conveyance
The following are examples of appropriate uses of a CMV while off-duty for personal conveyance include, but are not limited to:
- Time spent traveling from a driver’s en route lodging (such as a motel or truck stop) to restaurants and entertainment facilities.
- Commuting between the driver’s terminal and his or her residence, between trailer-drop lots and the driver’s residence, and between work sites and his or her residence. In these scenarios, the commuting distance combined with the release from work and start to work times must allow the driver enough...
InTooDeep Thanks this. -
#1 Nope and why are you going off duty at a shipper? #2 legal. # 3 nope , you may not have a load but you are going to get one. #4 Nope You would have a hard time convincing DOT on that one. It would be different if you were there a few hours and ran out of time. U might be able to pull that off if you sneak around under 5mph and don't set off your Qualcomm.

I have a suspicion most any trucker in there forums that have been driving for at least 2 years + has been in driver meetings where ANYTHING about the HOS is debated ad nauseam! It's what truckers do. I think the guidance issued by the FMCSA considering ((??)) is clear. What makes this topic not so clear is words like reasonable. DOT officers as well as safety critters that have different interpretations of what reasonable means. Take weight enforcement. I could cross a scale in anystate USA 2500 pounds overweight on a tandem on a Monday, then 3 days later another driver gets popped for overweight. This is what is so dang maddening about these topics. Sure I would love to say you should be able to travel 600 miles PC if you are otherwise legal. Then another will say but Moose 600 miles don't seem reasonable? get my point? This is why I feel the way I do. Scrap PC with the exceptions I noted and FIX the primary problem so drivers don't have to be off their logs looking for a legal safe place to park.
I will always advise a driver on most any topic!! Get it in writing from the Authority Holder's safety personnel! This way you have some form of cover. If they won't provide it, then write to the FMCSA and ask them!InTooDeep, Jenn72 and TheLoadOut Thank this. -
Moose 1958 said "This is at the heart of the problem in my view. The FMCSA uses the word reasonable and IT IS these officers that in the end are defining what reasonable means. This goes even further than PC. You could ask 10 DOT cops a question on most anything and get 10 totally different answers."
I agree, they're just looking to further their career. "Look sarge, I took a bad guy off the road, uh yep" -
Never seen a more convoluted bunch of horsesh t in my life . Da comrade. I see these rules in some form for non cmv in the future .
