I'll one up that, if you didn't want to honor a commitment, you should have to your own school and came up with the money.

Yes, commitments and promises should be honored .... by both sides. If one side fails to live up to their end of the bargain, the other side is no longer bound.

Did the company always pay you as promised? Was detention always paid as stipulated, were trailer searches paid fairly? Layover? Breakdown? We're the miles there as promised? Etc...

I would solve this problem with a law change. I would make ALL CDLs obtained through company financed training a conditional CDL. After a year it automatically cancels unless a certified form is submitted that states all financial agreements are complete.

i would support that. Might just put trucking companies out of the CDL mill business, as they should be. Why would anyone ever think that going into debt to your employer is a good idea?

Which isn't that long, but kinda is.
I guess it depends on you. Why the concern over the length of time? Compared to a four degree with no job gurantee is it still kinda long? Why not find a better situation?

I doubt the OP signed up for "free CDL" because of the detention pay. Honesty is doing the right thing, but only if everything else is perfect.

    So you support slavery? Gotcha!
You realize that companies will say they provided the training and send in the paperwork stating as much to tie the employee to them for a year. Even if they didn't actually provide the training.... No, it should never be that easy for a company to screw over an employee.

And anyway every contract I've ever seen has two clauses. One is time in the seat and the other is cash payments.
Op never stated he was unwilling to do the money repayment, just got tired of getting treating like a sub-human by whatever company is treating him like crap. Quit, move on to a better paying job that treats one like a human. The benefit is even after paying off the loan for CDL school he will likely still have been paid more in a year.

NO I do not support slavery. Holding a fricking driver to the fricking contract they signed without NOBODY holding a gun to their head is NOT supporting slavery. If someone is stupid enough to sign a contract without taking the time to fully understand what they are signing will NEVER get my support when they go back on their word and it is ON THEM!

Just for the record. I know one of the recruiters that works answering the phones of one of the trucking schools in the midwest. This person has sent me an email a while back where the carrier that is paying their way spells out what happens next. The cents per mile starting out is clearly listed. The conditions under which they are working is also spelled out. NOBODY attending that school once they go to orientation is ignorant of that first year and the conditions. I simply do not believe most of these woe is me i'm getting screwed over stories that find their way in these boards. I know better.
