If someone doesn't read like the contract and quits, then they owe the company the training money. What is wrong with that?

The correct term for this is not slavery. It is Indentured Servitude.

There is nothing wrong with quitting before the term is over. However it is only right to repay the money. Ignorance is never an excuse.

One more point. I know my comment about a law change is not workable and will lead to abuse. Most of that comment was me using a bit of hyperbole. However I do believe there should be a legal mechanism where a Judge as a part of a legit collection attempt can suspend a CDL until these monies are repaid.

Very true on both counts. And yes I know the difference, I was going for the emotional wording for more emphasis. :)

I guess my point is, there are already laws in place (contract, credit, and a few others dealing with money owed.) so that we don't need more laws. And especially more laws that specifically target the debtor to make it harder to get the debt paid off. Those are tactics dating back to peasant times to make it impossible for a peasant to actual buy their own land. (And likely earlier)

No, let the laws in place deal with the bad debt. After all, if the company didn't want to loan the money, no one is forcing them to.

Quitting before your contract is up speaks volumes. These companies are not asking a full year of employment. Trucking has a lot of BS. These will be signs of people that go to work for every mega carrier that's on the market. One little thing doesn't go your way, then it's on to the next carrier. If the commitment is 9 mos to a year, that will come and go. In trucking, OP, you have to learn to eat s*** and like the taste of it

Yea, it says he's tired of being abused by the company. Just because you will willing to take the abuse, doesn't mean everyone should. As for the 9 to 12 month comment, even if it goes quickly, why should the driver not move on to a better paying job?

I'm not saying he shouldn't move on to better paying job. I'm just saying that it's good days and bad days put here. The first year is always the toughest. Make it through that first year, and give yourself a truckload of options....no pun intended

I think most drivers move on. However with the megas there is no real difference. The happiest drivers I know are doing specialised hauling or are driving with small to medium sized carriers. If you search all my comments about advising people about how to get that CDL you will find my advice to be check out trade schools and see if you can get a grant. @Chinatown has advised this as well. I just think if you do the company financed way to honor that contract.
