Fuel up full once, then get an empty weight as soon after that as possible. That’s one way you’ll be able to avoid this.

That way, if theoretically you scale 33,000 empty and somebody tries to give you a 48,000 lb load, you’ll know they either have to lighten it up or you can’t take it.

    Forewarned is forearmed.

Most scale masters will give you a little liberty if you’re close to 34K & you’ve done all you can do to get legal.

If your trainer didn't show you how, here is a good video about sliding 5th wheels.

Thank you...that would make sense...there should be some leeway....as long as your total is under 80,000 lbs

Sliding the 5th wheel was to give more wiggle room for the tandems. You're right that it's not strictly needed.
But if he's going to be hauling heavy he'll need more weight on the steers anyway.

Not on the cabbage. It's Pendleton or Odgen before next fuel. Scales on top of cabbage.

Jaysus I thought I was good. This situation is really bad. Half tempted to throw that trailer two or three holes and examine how far to each "Nazi scale" and what will burn off before then.

WORSE CASE SCENARIO you can have a milch cow tanker truck deliver 200 gallons fuel to where you are from a local fuel dealer. You will be paying for it over the phone ahead of time with card. Probably yourn.

If I can find a field lop a hopper bolt or one gate loose and feed thebirds making a big circle. should take the 600 to 1000 pounds off you. Theft? Dunno.

Move trailer tandems two or three holes to get legal back there.

CAT again, check your drives. Estimate your fuel gallons currently as scaled.

Find out which bad scales ahead of your trip. Knoxville TN, Memphis AR, Kansas West overland, Cabbage, wyoming POE etc

Measure your remaining fuel. Minus 5 gallons. estimate how far you can go at 6 mpg.

If you end up somewhere too low to go get fuel, have it delivered to you. Route accordingly until past the Omaha. And enter the land of scales. There will be fuel everywhere every 50 miles. Get a dallop.

Your company will go crazy. But tell them the shipper is a problem.

The last part of my post is a solution that lightens the weight of the feed in that hopper trailer. Opps its all loose back there, spilled until below gross and legal axles full tanks. Off you go. Birds will take care of it.
