The way I got on local, and bypassed OTR completely, was to work my butt off hauling seasonal agriculture products all summer. In California, grapes are huge in the central valley. Same as tomatoes. Your best bet (in my opinion) would be to find whatever seasonal driving jobs you can find, work your butt off, prove that you are a valuable asset to the company, and then apply for a permanent position when the season ends. This is how I got my start in trucking. I applied for a seasonal position, worked 12 hours/day 7 days a week for like 3 months, then got offered a 40-hr/week driving job with benefits.

I get what your saying about OTR.. and that is true too... I know my first time through some cities on the interstate can be stressfull.. making sure you catch all the signs for your exits just so you stay on the same interstate can be overwhelming.. espcecially if you are not from a big city.. sometimes it is just crazy.. you gotta be in the righ two lanes then you got to get over and be in the left lane, then 1/2 mile down you gotto be in the right and take the clover leaf... when it is done you feel like you just drove for 30 minutes doing a spiral... but you end up with the city behind you and breath a sigh of relief and enjoy the space between cities... so, yes you are right about that..

That is on good thing about being on a dedicated account.. you run in smaller area and stop at th same places for the most part... so, you get to know your area and that does make it easier....

For the OP's friend.. he can look into a lot of things... and tak verything in to consideration...
