OK, back on topic!
And no time outs! -
Getting back to the topic at hand. As an O/O pulling doubles all the normal applies that usually goes into pulling doubles, heavier trailer up front, lighter in the back etc etc etc. And make sure you have a tractor that'll turn on a dime or has a fairly short wheel base. Backing a 28' pup with a 270"+ WB that doesn't want to turn is a nightmare. Take extra caution when hooking up or unhooking when pulling doubles. That articulator (gear) will take your finger off if it traps it between the eye and the hook. I'm sure they're going to train you on hooking up and breaking down your sets, usually when I'd help my dad hook up his sets back in the day he'd pull the gear over, I'd unhook it and set it close to the nose of the back trailer have him back up to it, hook it lock it, and let him hook the rear trailer. Seemed to work pretty well was about a 15 minute hook and book. Trying to keep that gear straight when backing although possible is very tricky especially when you can't see it. Keep the 5th wheel back, you shouldn't have to worry about your gross, and the only axles you'll need to worry about unless you're going over a single pad is your steer and drives. Also keep in mind pups don't turn like your regular 53 van. The back pup will follow the front pup and usually you don't have to swing as wide as you do with a regular trailer. It just takes time to get used to pulling those darn things. Never pull a set of empties in the winter, and don't unlock that pintle before dropping that rear pup. Also don't be the jerk that tips his gear up after dropping it. Takes about 20 minutes to get one of them stupid things back down if you're under 160lbs.Lilbit Thanks this.
