Hey Ladies... I'm an aspiring Driver, and am just wondering if you feel you faced any particular challenges in the industry simply because you are a woman, and what steps you took to overcome those challenges... And if you have any advise, tips, or tricks to help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

I am a MAN. But I like women. The question is offensive as it assumes that truckers are sexist. We are not. We are stupidist. We are against stupid. If you come into this industry and do your job in a Professional manner that reflects credit on others in this Profession, you will be accepted and rewarded like everyone else.

If you are stupid and do stupid things we will let you know. Because you are a woman we will use terms that reflect your having XX chromosomes. But we are not using those terms to insult every woman, just the stupid thing being done. You back into my truck at a truckstop and I am going to insult you. I would do the same to anyone who backed into my truck. And I would use what ever insult I could think of to get my point across.

You are welcomed as a driver but your being a woman should neither get you anything or hold you back.

Unless you were a cheerleader and then the world is yours.

I work for Werner, and in cdl school, in training and currently out solo as a driver, I have been treated like a human being. I haven't been given preferential treatment, I haven't been picked on or singled out, or asked to do anything by anyone that they wouldnt have done themselves.

My trainer was always fair and had realistic expectations. Same with my instructors in CDL school. My dispatcher is a fair guy, always pre-assigns me before I drop my current load and keeps me running. If I need home time, I ask for it, he makes sure I get it as timely as possible.

Just be yourself, don't ask for or look for anyone to cut you breaks, or do things for you because you're a woman and you'll be fine. Do you part, do the job to the best of your ability and you shouldnt have any problems.

If you get a trainer that hits on you, get away from him and get another trainer. No reason for that crap. Stand up for yourself and dont allow yourself to get pushed around, but dont be a problem child with a bad attitude and a sense of entitlement either, know what I mean?

I know plenty of women drivers that drive better than a lot of men, train students better, and can downright do the job better. Study hard, pay attention to everything you learn, and give 100% every day and you'll have fun. Because this is the easiest, funnest job you'll ever have and the pay is pretty darn good too. I have yet to have a "hard day". Physically, this job is not that demanding. Mentally, it requires you to be on your game all day every day and to pay attention to details, careful planning and good execution.

    good luck out there!

Hi PP, Sorry, I'm not a lady, but perhaps I, as well as other men, can help too. Many changes have occurred in the trucking business, and it has never been more female friendly than ever. Back when I started trucking, in the '70's, you could count the women you'd see on one hand. Trucks were hot, noisy, rough riding beasts, and was generally a man's job. Women just didn't do that job. Things have changed, thank goodness, and women have more than proved they can do anything a man can do. My ex-girlfriend, was a pioneer woman driver back in the '80's, and still drives an 18 to this day. When she started, her ex-husband had/has a trucking company, and thought she'd give it a try, as she was a farm girl that knew all about machines anyway. She was treated terribly out there. No womens bathrooms or showers sometimes, laughed at, picked on, as men felt their manhood was challenged, and you will run across that today still. Personally, I feel there are better jobs out there for women, health care, management, caring type jobs, and not strapping down a load of steel, or walking across a truck stop parking lot at 2am. Keep an eye over your shoulder, keep some protection with you(mace or a can of starting fluid), as there are lots of fruitcakes out there. Women make great truck drivers, and equipment and facilities have become more user friendly, and of course, cell phones , so you aren't alone. Good luck.

My wife runs Class B LTL freight with a lift gate. To say she works harder than me on any given day would be a gross understatement, but I do have a totally different type of job than she does, she peddles freight, I hook up some chains on a lugger box. But she tells me she has noticed that, while the attitude towards women being in this business has changed for the better significantly even since she started driving 8 years ago, she still runs into the occasional chauvinistic sob that thinks all women should be at home in the kitchen... But, she also has plenty of customers who go out of their way to help her out as well, like pulling her freight off her truck for her or putting her in the front of the line at a dock. But who wouldn't want to help out a cute little blonde driving that "big ol truck" :biggrin_25525:

Wife and I team drive. Her biggest complaint is drivers who are going slow then speed up when she tries to pass them. I think that's a common problem for everyone. Other than that...she doesn't have anything negative to say.

Just remember that in this industry tons of guys will hit on you. Don't fall for their tricks.

It gets old seeing women think that they are all gonna die because they're gonna drive a truck. Your not, matter of fact you'll probably never be bothered. I've seen some GOOD looking women drivers but I'm not gonna go over there and pester you. And your not gonna do it to me. If you come out here with that daddy's little girl attitude or the "But I'm a girl" attitude your gonna get railroaded quick. We don't stand for it. I seen a gal up in Ohio on 70 the other night she got fuel next to me we stood there for a few minutes and talked soon as my pump kicked off I went back to doing my thing and her doing hers. Being a women in trucking is like being a woman in an office. It's nothing new, kinda few, but not new.

I hate that myself. And then once you're out in the hammer lane all the traffic stacks up behind you, and then starts coming around you on your right once the idiot speeds up.

Oh yes, happens all the time. Every time a woman's voice appears on the CB all the idiots come out who think she's asking for a date when she only wants directions.

When I drove a tri-axle dump for an asphalt company, there was a woman that her husband owned a couple of trucks, and she drove one of them. And she was a hottie, but used that to her advantage several times. While she could turn the steering wheel, and stockpile, or back up to the spreader, there were many things she couldn't do. Once, we all got put on "stockpile" where you had to load yourself, and she stood there with her arms folded, she couldn't run a loader,so she'd get on the CB and say in a sexy voice, "Can someone help me"? Of course, these guys would jump over each other to help her, but I didn't think that was right. Or if there was some asphalt left in the box, and it cooled, and you had to chip it out with a pick axe, no place for a lady. She didn't last too long there. Pick your jobs carefully.
