At the advice of the folks on this board I'll be tearing back into it to check the protrusions, the motor has NOT been run yet only turned over a few times with a bar. The truck is at home, if the counterbores needed to be cut can they do that out of a shop with the motor still in the truck?

The kid who we hired screwed up on a few other things, main caps were installed wrong and out of sequence as were the the connecting rod caps and two of the connecting rods. Also found a bunch of the bearings were installed DRY! We had the main caps fixed as well as the rod caps. Called CAT about the two rods that were out of sequence and the technical adviser told us that we'd be fine as long as long as the proper rod caps were on the proper rods, even if they were out of sequence. To say the least that kid will NOT be touching my truck again.

They can come to you and cut the counterbores with the block in the truck.

wow that scares me! another thing just my prefference, get a new spacer plate that goes under the head dont reuse the original one, it's a cheap $400. one thing i do if i reuse rods is inscribe the # on the side of the cap and rod, that way you dont mix them up. make sure he put the cooler jets back in the same holes also or god forbid didnt bend them if they were not taken out when you pulled the liner packs. assembly lube or just plain oil should be put on all bearings and a little bit on the headbolt threads and washers. i also pour some oil over the rockers before i put the valvecovers back on. OIL IS YOUR FRIEND!! did he oil up the liner o-rings before he put the liners in? if not good chance he rolled the o-rings on the liners.

Scary part is the rods and caps were engraved from the factory with the numbers on them.

As for the cooling jets I don't believe they were numbered so not really sure if they went back in the same way they came out. One did get bent but it was bent back close to the factory shape.

Another question in regards to the head, can I reuse the headbolts or do I need to replace those?

personally i wouldn't reuse headbolts after they have been stretched a couple of times, but thats me. i've had to many issues with them in the past and recently. the cooler jets, there is a procedure to angle them correctly,if you dont have a cat manual, get one it's the best part you will ever buy for your engine.

The spacer plate doesn't seal anything. It only spaces the head from the block correctly. It does not go bad, unless, when a head gasket blows, the combustion cuts away at the spacerplate and removes metal, and that is usually only between two cylinders. If the plate measures .3380" plus or minus .0005", all over, especially between cylinders, don't waste your money on a new one. (With the exception of an aluminum plate, always replace aluminum plates)

    Kenllah and Starcar575 Thank this.
