Why not store the straps on the winches of the trailer? Doesn't it save time? I know some do and some don't.

It saves time at the final, takes more time at the shipper. Time wise, it's 6 in one, half dozen in the other. Taking your straps out of the weather as much as possible helps protect them and preserve them which means you will replace them less often and save money.

    Hegemeister Thanks this.

And those soggy straps don't rust your winches.

Also if you take them out, you can throw a harmless cloth roll over a load instead of a metal hook that could hit a wandering driver or yard worker.

Actually, I use throwing the hook over as my contribution to Darwinism. If they are dumb enough to walk close to a loaded trailer that is being strapped down, they are too dumb to live in this world.

Guess you've never loaded at a place where you really don't have a choice but to work next to other trucks that are strapping down at the same time....

I use the hooks being thrown over as a Darwin thing too... I figure if someone is stupid enough to their straps that way when I'm in the area they don't need to be allowed to live...

Or at a customer where you aren't allowed to throw the hook as they don't want their product damaged, ie air conditioners.

I don't understand throwing hooks anyway. If you throw the hook, you have to throw it from one side, go around to the other side to hook it up, and then come back to cinch it down. If you throw the strap, you just throw it, hook it (or hook it, throw it, as you prefer,) then go around and cinch it down.

Just came into my mind, I see this alot with the new generation of flatbedders, when they throw the straps over the load, the flat hook or ring is at the end. I have only done this when it's really windy, other wise I throw the strap like it's suppose to be thrown. Not to mention, you won't bust someone's head wide open when your working in a crowded area. Also, seems like alot more work going back and forth, when if it is thrown correctly, you hook the flathook end ,d-ring on that particular side then you go to the other side and feed it thru and winch down.
