Another thing is that some of these guys who keep the straps on the winches just leave them in there. They keep the whole thing coiled on the winch, pull out how much they need, toss it over, hook it, then tighten it back up. This is not a proper way to use straps, as that much strap coiled in the winch will not be tightened properly, and you can cinch down on that thing with retard strength and stand on the extra long winch bar with all of your pfj pizza eating belly weight, and as it settles going down the road you still have it coming loose.
Maybe some of the guys using winches for storage aren't doing it that way, but if you pull it all the way back out and feed it through properly, then it seems to me like you are negating any time savings you might have had from keeping them in there anyway.

I agree 100%, the only reason I would see them doing this,(coiled up on the winch side) is the Mega mills have the newbies to deal with and them switching trailer or dropping loaded one at receivers.

I dropped and hook most of the time, but I keep all my securement's in my possession.

We do that too. The straps stay with the trailers but the chains are your responsibility and they go on the truck.
There are times that I or others will preload a trailer for someone else and we always remove our chains when we drop the trailer unless the piece(s) will fall off.
The only exception to that rule is the 4 axle flats. They have both straps and chain in the boxes so we use that first then if we need to stuff off the truck. But then when we drop the trailer we remove the stuff we used off the truck if any.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
You know, it's a shame you can't buy a sense of humor, then you might understand that I was joking.
As far as how someone chooses to do their job, that's their choice & it doesn't really matter what you think. As long as they are getting the job done without damaging anything that's all that matters.

The contruction I used to work for we all had an assigned lowboy and shared the steps and flats. We left the straps on the winches all the time and I never had a problem with loads coming loose because of the extra on the winches.
