CFI tried that with me. I told them my tax info was none of their business.

Its not a CFI thing, its a FMCSA thing........and it will be the norm in the not too distant future for all carriers big and small.

to me it sounds more like you were a contractor for that customer vs a full time self employment. i'd hope a 1099 and maybe a call or letter from that customer would be more than enough to demonstrate your employment during that time.

you list your time as independant contractor working for or assigned to etc " emp name" you are not his employee. if they call him and ask about employee XXX he may get scared thinking tax or IRS and immed go into nope never heard of him.

I say this as I sit here right now working as a contractor and it is that way on my resume'. (my way of saying I'm not guessing what you should put down"

BTW, 1099 working for the same dude for years is just his way of getting around the system and screwing you. hope your making bank while there, and covering the tax issues. not my business, just saying CYA.

Self employment verification can be tough. Owned my own business for about three years, and had to go through the hassle when I went back to driving.

Easiest was my current employer. They called me cell phone, which was my business line. Asked for me by name, as I was the owner of the company. Told me they wanted to verify one of my employees and gave me name as the employee. I verified all the info about myself, and they never noticed that my name as owner and my name as employee were the same.

Worst started with them asking for 1099's. Problem was that I didn't have any, since I did not have any single purchase/expense over $600 and was not required by the IRS to have any. Spent the next few weeks faxing over an endless supply of paperwork, many of which were asked for several times, and explaining more times than I can count the IRS requirements for 1099's. Still not sure they ended up with the proof they needed, or if they just got tired of asking.
