The fleets in that era I worked for tended to run straight 9 speeds. 3:55's with low pro 22.5's. 3:70's with 11R 22.5 or low pro 24.5's. 3:90's with 11R 24.5's. Expect them to run out at about 68 MPH as best I remember. Most of them were 315 - 350 HP. The odd duck with a 400 and a 9 over, 355's Lo Pro 22.5's did a great job and got better mileage.
clausland, spsauerland, SmallPackage and 1 other person Thank this. -
as above, it's a 9 speed, but has 11R24.5 tires. the shop that's working on it, they have a couple of cabovers, said it's going to drink fuel. they're getting 4-5 mpg, and i should expect the same.650cat425 Thanks this. -
There's usually a tag on the right side of the transmission on the passenger side of the truck that should tell you what model it is and if it is overdrive. My guess would be no.
As far as the mileage goes it depends. If you run more on flat ground with that gearing you might do pretty well on mileage. If you are going to pull a van trailer an air deflector on the roof would also help.
For good mileage you also need a good matched set of tires.
But the mountains will definitely eat more fuel.650cat425 Thanks this. -

Or 68 through WV and MD lol, that would be my first mod, adding jakes.
650cat425 Thanks this. -
If you are interested let me know. I'll have to ask around to see what's a fair price for them.650cat425 Thanks this. -
I get a discount for paying cash, labor rate is $75/hr (down from $100/hr), and i've called around, no one has one that will fit.
As for the jakes, that's not high priority right now. Next thing on it will be brakes all around, with drums, chambers, lines, studs, then alcoas, and virgin rubber. from there, all air lines, alternator, starter, rebuild the fuel pump, and go from there.
In a nutshell, I intend to drop another $6k+ on it. I understand I could get a newer truck for the money I am putting into it now (plus what I paid for it), but then, I'd be doing all of this anyways, and I'd rather stick with this one for a bit. Depending on the price of the jakes, that might be something after i've run it for a few months. I do appreciate it though. If you want to find out a decent price, go right ahead, just so long as you know I am not going to be buying them right now. -
spsauerland and 650cat425 Thank this.
