At some point toward the end of orientation, you will be issued a fuel card. This could be Comdata or EFS and you will learn how to use it. This is the primary payment means drivers use. A company driver does NOT pay for fuel.

Do the majority of companies allow you to take your truck home or does that vary on each company.

That is a very broad issue. I used to drive for a carrier that wanted their trucks parked securely. Then most of their drivers will park all over the place. Every carrier has their policies in this regard. Honestly, during orientation, these questions and more will be covered. The average orientation lasts around 3 days.

I went with Swift and their 'Academy' almost a year ago now.
Unsure if things have changed, but here is how it was for me.
I think they would provide transportation to the place, but I had my own vehicle and didn't need it.
Swift provided room while you were with them at a local hotel. They have since changed which hotel they use, so can't speak of it. Usually, you share a room with another person of the same gender. I had a special arrangement and had a room to myself, but that is the exception and not the rule.
They provide lunch on the first day of training. No other meals furnished after that.
You were not paid during training as you were not yet considered an employee.
Also, they do ot guarantee they will hire you after training, although I have not seen anyone who actually completed the training and get their CCL who wasn't at least offered employment.
I am a Veteran and had a 'scholarship' as they call it. That basically means they didn't take out any money from my check afterward and as long as I stay with them for 1 year, I will have no obligation to repay any of my training.
I think the fee was $7500 for the training.
Non-Veterans would pay $80 per week for one year. After one year, the remaining debt is forgiven. But, the weird part is they turn around and give you $40 a week for your first 2 years. So, in effect, the first year you'll have $40 less dollars in your paycheck and the second year you will get an extra $40. The result being if you work for them for 2 years, you have not paid anything for the training.
Different folks have had quite varied experiences with Swift. But, they have been good to me and I enjoy working for Swift, although I wish Swift had a better reputation than they do.
