I personally have not worked for any union shops. How does a person working for a union shop retire at the age of 47?? The only 2 places that I have ever seen this was law enforcement and the military.

In the military, there are retirees as young as 37 years of age. In law enforcement, I believe the youngest retiree has been 41 years of age.

Union bylaws will differ if its teamsters or another. I know that the shop I worked in was Steelworkers Union that hired through a temp agency for your 90 days. After your 90 days, the shop hired you and that was your hire date. They did not hire you until your 90 days was complete. In contrast, I worked for the ironworkers union who did the same thing, but they retro hire dated you for seniority purposes. Ask your union rep, or go to the union hall and ask. Don't trust anything you hear from other union hands, they aren't always right. You should also get a copy of your collective bargaining agreement that should detail this as well. If you didn't get a copy of the CBA, again, you really need to see your shop steward/union rep and get a copy and READ IT.
