Bison Boy, you mention traveling/independence as a reason to get into trucking. I think that is a BIG misconception, and a big reason for the turnover rate.
Yes, you do get to travel, but sightseeing is not your first priority. Here's an example; in 32 years of trucking and going through Nashville, Tn sooooooo many times, I only was able to go to Opryland once. Never was able to go downtown, simply because I had to get my load delivered. Visiting family is the same. Yeah, I'm passing by 'Uncle Freds' house, but, hey, it's 3 am and I don't think he wants to be woken up, even if I am his favorite nephew.
Even if you have a day off in Atlanta, do you want to leave your truck at a truck stop and cab it downtown to party? Not if you're under a refrigerated load.
Independence? Answering to dispatch, shippers, consignees, Security people, police agencys, shop personnel and rules, rules, rules galore isn't my idea of independence. Now, I'm not saying to forget about trucking, but just be aware that delivering the load is your first priority. After a 650 mile drive, you'll probably just want a shower and sleep.![]()

The one good thing about a CDL is as long as you keep your nose clean... MVR clean... And not abandon any equipment... You have a job whenever you need it!
BisonBoy Thanks this. -
Here's your sightseeing right here....
Heading out of Atlanta, GA at 7 a.m.

Thanks guys, Not only do I appreciate the insight, I also am a fan of tongue in cheek humor and some good sarcasm, one of the things that kept me in the military these last 20 years. The grass is never greener. I don't want to say something glib, like the infamous, "tight lines" of the fishing forums, but have a good trip, where ever you're going! Allow Me, no wonder you are still your uncles favorite nephew, and on a sidenote, I'd love to live in Sevierville TN. What a great place.
