53 foot trailers and zoning is only part of the issue. The primary issue driving parking space is two fold, the first is land is very expensive. Then truck stop insurance rates are also based on size. Just adding an acre of parking in some places can add up to a million bucks to start up costs. Then you have the local tax issues.

The worst one I saw was a pilot in Virgnia just north of the scale house. I got pulled in for an inspection. Well Iost all of my hours and they wouldn't let me stay there.
So I go a few miles to a Pilot with about 10 spots. It was so tight you had to go through the fuel line and park nose in. When you leve you have to back up to date the fuel islands. -
The mindset of truck stop management is this........fuel first, "to go" food items second THEN some available parking. Truck stops don't make $$$$ supplying parking spots, right ? Hence, various types of parking configurations. Also, most times, it's a hired contractor that paints the lines. They work with the available space that they have.
hunted Thanks this. -
Certainly with many older truck stops this is the case but with newer builds, You don't create, and buy the lot you want. You have to work with what is there. Many times 10 more feet would have been ideal but it couldn't be negotiated with the [other] land owner.
Where you see this the most is rest areas that were built 40-60 years ago when 45 foot trailers were the norm and there simply is no room for today's rigs.Last edited: May 17, 2016
