And there was a little guy prior to Eisenhower who had the idea of national superhighways as early as 1918. The first plans were for some 50,000 miles of roadway.
General John Pershing came in in the early 20's with the idea to use the highways to move military equipment.
It wasn't until the 50's when an American President who liked Germanys autobahn, after traveling it did the U.S. actually make a legit interstate highway system.

Ok, so there might be some truth to my suspicion that "back in the day" lots were designed for a 48' trailer and got tight with the introduction of 53's....
So...
Is there any possibility that the reason we have 53's instead of say...60's is because they figured 53' was about the maximum one could maneuver into all the pre existing spots designed for 48's?

I try to avoid shutting down at the mega chain truck stops whenever possible, which sometimes it isn't but a good truck stop directory can come in handy to find the indy or smaller off brand places where the megas generally don't fuel at or venture into. Anyway, parking is usually not as much an issue and the showers are usually cheaper if you have to pay for them. But I agree some of the parking lot layouts are a joke and way too cramped at some of these newer places. You can tell they don't have the driver in mind too much.

It took great ridicule and lots of failure to make some of the world's most used and precious materials.
What do you think we would be doing today, if we all just agreed that the square rock was a better wheel than the round one? -
Blackshack46 Thanks this.
