Quiting a mega carrier.

Nope. And if I am not mistaken that is a line from the movie apocalypse now. A movie I have never seen.

 

You, sir, are correct!

 

I wouldn't worry, thousands of driver have given the dispatch the keys and said goodbye...knowing they will never go back for a second helping of the mega carrier nightmares.

 

Also, Apocalypse Now is actually a blatant rip off of a Joseph Conrad novel, Heart of Darkness.

 

I pretty much agree with all the suggesstions here, especially walking in with a smiling face and being polite when you hand them the keys. Anything else woud just make a bad situation. I would not feel bad about it, because I have actually seen and been places were drivers were fired over nothing and left stranded.

I was at the Flying J down in Hope Hull, Alabama one day, and talked to a Willy Sanders driver who had been waiting on a load call because his qual com was broke. He showed me the calls/messages to distpach on his phone, and message he received stating they will get back to him. Almost four hours later they called and asked why he was not communicating with the office. After explaining again that he was waiting on them...they said no excuse to not communicate and told him to clean out the truck and get out of it. About 10 minutes after talking to him (with all his stuff stacked on the back of the lot) a Willy truck shows up with 2 drivers, one of them took the truck and left. They left him on the lot. Point is; they could care less about him. So, why offer to put yourself in a position to be left stranded-get back as soon as you can and get out.

 

Also, talk to the company you are going to. The company I went to from Swift told me not to worry about where I ended up on my last day with Swift. The new company (Danny Herman) would provide a rental car to orientation for me wherever I ended up.

 

Ehh, 2 week notice be ######. My philosophy is this, if you do something that the company deems necessary to fire you over, they won't give you any 2 week notice to find another job. You will be shown the door then and there and told good riddance. I apply the same method, if a carrier does something I deem intolerable, I walk in and say "see ya." While some may not agree, it is what it is.

About the only way I'd do it different, is if I were to be working for a great manager/owner, at a smaller carrier where me quitting on the spot would greatly impact the company, depending on how severe the situation is that is causing me to leave.

But when it comes to these big companies, I wouldn't give it a second thought, and I #### sure wouldn't give them a heads up. Most and I mean MOST couldn't care less because there's 30 other people already coming out of their training phase, ready to hop in a truck and go solo, hence why I'll never work for such a company.

The same can be said for mid size and even some smaller carriers whether it be local or OTR. Some just don't give a flip about you as a driver, so I always keep my wits about me and never play the "buddy game" because if it came to it, most will cut you loose without thinking twice. That's my commentary regarding this matter.
