If you don't give 2 weeks notice, whether its in trucking or not, your mancard is pink. Leaving someone in a lurch is a stupid thing to do, and it doesn't matter if its a single truck outfit, or a mega. It tells someone all they need to know about you. Man up, and tell them what your going to do... And do what you say your going to.
Last time I gave two weeks notice I was let go on the spot screwing me oit of money I sorely needed. So ya I dont give two weeks unless my mortgage is already paid up.
Young Blood ....the world is NOT a 2-way street, meaning if the company decides to fire you, you will not be given a 2 week notice.
Prime will be happy if you get the truck to a terminal to turn it in. most likely SPRIMO. If your FM wants to play games with you then talk to someone higher up the ladder before you leave to make sure things are good. Upper management deals with reality and shades of grey much better.
Young Blood? If that was in reference to me and my outlook... I'm not that young, and I've been around the block a few times. Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that you will not be given a two weeks notice if you are about to be fired. You shouldn't be. If you are about to be fired, you did something stupid, and you should expect to be fired. If you didn't screw up? That could only mean that you never should have been in your given industry to begin with, because you're apparently no good at it. Nobody gets fired for being the best. And if you're not the best, or in the process of acquiring the title, then you should change fields to something that actually interests you.
I always give two weeks notice. But I always make sure I can start immediately at my new job in case they tell me I don't have to finish off my two weeks.
It is not completely true that you are fired for being a goldbrick. I have heard of hands being fired for trying to do the job the right way and the employer is a gypo.
I had a guy quit on me about 5 years ago, gave me 2 weeks notice. We're a small outfit, and it would have really hurt if he had just turned in the keys and walked. Hated to see him go, but he got a great offer he just had to take. Last month I forwarded his contact info to a vendor of mine looking for someone with his specific skills. He got an interview last week. What comes around, goes around.
