I tried to get a new truck the day i was assigned to this one. They basically told me if i dont drive that truck i dont get a truck. And by extension dont get paid.
I just told them i quit this morning and that i will deliver the load first. Theyre deciding if they want me to deliver or split the load off of me.

You did the right thing. Hope everything works out well for you.

If the company that you're going to work for has no problem with you quitting while still assigned to a load, what does that say about them?
FireLotus Thanks this. -

The day I sent in my QC message I was retiring my FM called me. I was under a load. I was told he was going to try his best to get me routed through the home terminal. He did, when I got there I was asked by his boss and her boss why now and all asked me to reconsider my decision. Most carriers are either going to try to talk to you or they have wrote you off already. To me this is a better observation. What does it say about a driver that their company give all the other things will just sit back and let said driver quit? -
They will still get you for quitting under dispatch and not giving a proper notice. In this industry I never try and burn bridges when leaving a company.

im sick of that outdated "two week notice" nonsense, although if they can ding you DAC score i would say do it to protect yourself. my last non-trucking employer terminated my employment for vaping, outdoors. they changed their policies three times until it suited them, never gave the policy in writing, nor had written disciplinary "steps". they left me on the property by myself every afternoon, there literally was no one there to be effected in any way shape or form by my vaping.
when they terminated my employment NO disciplinary action was taken prior to termination. no warning verbal nor written, no suspension, just your fired. they met me in the parking lot and told me to get in my car and GO home. never come back. OK, i was treated like i committed theft no simply used an ecig.
we live in an at will state, they can end my employment at any time at any reason, no notice required. it took 7 weeks to get unemployment because they tried to fight it, they lost the case because as i said no warning.
personally i think that the "two week" notice is expecting the employee to give the employer respect they dont return to you. my experience really makes me want to give notices in the future. the idea of a TWO WEEK notice came from an era when employers had more respect for employees, and era when people stayed at jobs for many, many years. WHY are we expected to give them something they would NEVER give us.
finish delivering the load to protect yourself. -
As you've heard a dozen time, deliver the load so you can counter anything they say with that fact.
Regarding the smell, maybe you could counter that smell by pissing all over the interior yourself. Just like a dog masks another dog's scent with his own......... -
As a Recruiter/Staffing agent I just neeed to add something to this thread...
Just because you are going to orientation Monday, does not necessarily mean you have a job at that company.
When I am working with a driver who is driving for a company and wanting to move to another company, I as them when they think they want to go to orientation.. some drivers like a week at home between companies, I want them to have time to properly leave the company they are with on as good as terms as they can in case when they get to orientation at the new company it doesn't work out... it could be that when they get to orientation they realize they made a mistake and want to return to the old company..
I know, you drivers think poorly of recruiters, and will not believe me when I tell you I am a person and one with a heart and conscious. Nothing makes me more nervous than a driver leaving a company and going to another... not until after they make it through orientation, and been there a couple months and I do a follow up call and hear from them they are glad they changed companies.
Having said that, ot all recruiter are equal... makes me a little nervous or suspicious that you got and orientation start date so quickly... it could mean you were working with a recruiter who fills seats and keeps orientation classes full... not the best recruiters to work with.. they don't care about you and what will happen if you don't make it through orientation...
I wish you the best of luck and hope all works out well..
However, in the future ask questions before you take the actions... like asking for advice before setting it up to be going to orientation on Monday..
Obviously from the speed you are making these decisions you are making your decisions out of frustration and desperation.. unfortunately that is not when we make our best decisions..noluck Thanks this. -
As for an employee not being given notice that they are going to be terminated... the general thought is a sub par employee should realize the likelyhood of being terminated..
For lay offs, downsizing and things often, but unfortunately not always employees are advised of potential lay offs, closing and such..
Not always though, as there have been trucking companies abruptly close and leave drivers stranded across the country... which is terrible and wrong!
The two week notice also allows an employee to quit on good terms and leave the door open for return if the new job doesn't work out...
Also speaks a lot to the character, work ethic and integrity of a person.KillingTime and noluck Thank this.
