That is a FT-840 it is the 2nd oldest radio I have and one I will not part with. It is simple to use and I have the AM/FM/CW/SSB filters or boards installed.
They and the FT-747 before it are good examples of KISS engineering.

Here is my HF rig. Its a late 70's classic from Kenwood. The TS-520S was a solid state hybrid with 2 output tubes and a driver tube. I picked this mint radio up for $400 at a hamfest last year. He still had the box, packing, manuals and an MC-50 desk mic for it. Id say I got a good deal...

It is a judgement call as to what is and is not a real 10 meter set.
Look at a ranger 2950 stock out of the box it is a real 10 meter radio it covers the entire band with am/ssb/fm modes. MODIFIED it is just another way for the lawless user to get a lot of coverage for his bucks ......
Radios that are AM or AM/FM only and do not cover 29.0 - 29.7 mhz are outright junk useless as a 10 meter radio and made for the illegal CB radio user.
I think if the EXPORT radio market came out with radios that if you converted them DID NOT cover 12 or 10 meters ( SAY 25.000 -27.999 mhz ) the HAM outcry would die off a lot ..... let the people licensed for that band handle it right now we have to run off the ones who still don't get it .....
99.999% of the hams I know are simply sick of bootlegers tuneing up on nets are shouting AUDIO ..... AUDIO .... even as far up as 29.600 ......
Right now the FCC is not efective .... -
Makes me feel like a Gadfly or something....and that aint good!
From RCI site linked below:
7. Do you service Galaxy, RG-99, etc. radios?
- We receive calls regarding other radios including the Galaxy, Galaxy DX, RG-XX line, General, and Connex for parts and service. To help unravel any confusion: yes, Ranger manufactures the radios for these companies, but under a strict private label agreement, often times at a different factory. However, under that agreement, we (RCI - Ranger USA) do not sell, warranty, service or handle parts, for those products and are not affiliated with them in any other way. The respective companies maintain and service their own products.

If you still don't understand where and why "EXPORT" radios are manufactured...PLEASE...I BEG YOU WITH TEARS IN MY EYES....PLEASE... DONT QUOTE ME HERE AND TURN ME INTO GADFLY'S OPPOSITE!
heheheheheheheheheeheeee See I'm losin' it already! HEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
