I have a Rand Mcnally Tablet 85 it is almost 2 years old, It has been shutting off and rebooting quite frequently. Anyway, the last few Rand Mcnally's i have had only lasted only a few years as well. So it's time for a new one. Any Rand Mcnally or Garmin GPS someone can recommend?

My RM GPS was a few years old and did the same thing. I feel like they have a failure built into them. Unfortunately, I won’t buy another one of their products, despite their user interface being the best for me I’ve experienced.
I currently have a Garmin GPS and absolutely hate the interface. I’ve had their cycling computers with GPS and hated the interface of them, as well.
Generally speaking, all the products of a manufacturer will have the same operating system. Good luck finding something you actually like.Last edited: May 16, 2025

RMs are pretty flimsy. I treated mine (RM-740) as delicately as possible and could only get 4-5 years out of it. I kept my RM out of the sun and powered it down and unplugged power cord during my 10 hour & 34 hour breaks. The Garmin 770 is more rugged, better screen brightness, a slightly better magnet mount than RM.
I strongly suggest you get a dedicated GPS from Garmin or RM and NOT the do-everything device with a truck GPS built into it. Not only are they cheaper but they are more reliable.bad-luck, Arctic_fox and ducnut Thank this. -

Once upon a time I had Rand McNally and it died. Then I got a Garmin diesel and it just lasts and lasts and lasts. Garmin is the superior product. Only bought 2 in the last seven years. The Rand McNally did not last even two years.
