I sent Tech support at Rand Mcnally an email over a week ago and have not recivied any kind of response from them. It seems that I remember someone having a similar problem awhile back but I have not been able to find the post to see if it was ever resolved and if so how.
The problem I am having is with the touch screen on my TND 500. The screen always responds correctly and immediately when touched in the center but along the upper and especially lower edges of the screen I often get either no response (other than the clicking sound that indicates the screen has been touched) or I get the wrong response and only occasionally does it respond correctly.
Some examples of what I am talking about are:
1. When unit is first turned on it goes to the warning/disclaimer screen. I hit accept and hear the click that indicates I have touched the screen but nothing happens. I may have to hit accept 10-15 times before I get a response. I always hear the click sound and sometimes the accept button will turn gray the way it should but the unit just stays on the warning screen.
2. Trying to enter a new destination, the letters at the bottom of the screen either tend not to respond or give the wrong response. Example I hit the letter N and get an H instead, so I hit delete and nothing happens. Trying hitting delete a couple more times with no response and then finally after hitting delete 4 or 5 times I get the letter L. At this point I either have to keep hitting delete for a few more minutes before it finally goes back to where I want or hit the back button in the upper right hand corner and start over but the back button doesn't always work either.
3. I have a destination entered and I am looking at the map page but want to go back to the home page. I click the homepage icon in the lower right hand corner and the unit responds as if I have tapped the middle of the screen usually. Sometimes though it will zoom out instead and only rarely it will take me to the home page. Often though it just doesn't do anything. I do find that if I try and touch just the very lower right hand corner of the icon with just the tip of my finger nail I am more likely to get an accurate response.
I suspect this is a software and not hardware issue however I have hit the reset button on the back several times but it continues to behave the same way.

To get there, tap: Main Menu / Preferences / Device Settings / Scroll down twice / Align Screen.
Follow the little cross shape around the center and corners of the screen , carefully touching it in the exact center of the cross each time.
If you do this correctly, it will fix your issue.Mark Kling Thanks this. -
I had seen the screen calibration back when I first bought the unit and had forgotten all about it. Thanks for reminding me, everything seems to be working fine now.
Dieselboss and Mark Kling Thank this. -
The T5B and the T5C, if you have touch problems in the upper right of the screen you will need to do a screen alignment.. normally the back button will not work correctly.
The T7C, this usually will affect the middle of the screen. Do a screen alignment.
Thanks,

Hi Mark
Will you's ever let the driver pick the screen oppions? I had a Iway500 by Lowrance and you could do it with. And you could make the info boxes translucent, i found it made for more screen showing instead of a quater of the screen being used up with diffrent colour boxes reducing the maping screen .Thanks looking forward to hearing back -
Thanks,

I have one this thing is total junk... Last wednesday I called Rand Mc Nally and spoke to level 2. This junk when it turns on immediately goes to an error screen that states cannot start navigation engine, please try again. I asked to speak to a supervisor after hearing about their total unprofessional return policy. I spoke to melanie and she informed me on thursday that a return label would be shipped out.. Here it is Monday no label yet !!!!! I called again and guess what label still was not shipped out. Spoke with Melanie again, same spiel of nonsense.. $ 424.00 w/ tax and now I have to go for 10-15 days without one.. Should have bought a Garmin !!!!

Where and how long ago did you buy your TND? The current return policy is in line with their business practices. I know of many companies that will send you an RMA and once the item is returned and noted, they will send a replacement. Rand is not the only company that goes along with this line of business practice.
If you have a T5C I could have send you a Flash SD to bring your TND back to life. I can do the T5B, but it involves a little more.
But, with the error message that you are getting, it seems you have more along the line of a corrupted file. That is totally cureable. Their are some folders that can be deleted and the Dock will restore them.
E-mail me and let's try to get your TND back to life asap..
Thanks,

what is differance between the td5B and the td5C ? If you bought a used unit would you buy either or only the td5 C ?
