Buried in the mix. No wonder! I don't have time to look for buried stuff when I'm on here!

Route tools is basically a software product that you load up on your PC and it gives you all the legal routes that you can drive as a trucker. If you have to do multiple stops, it'll route you the fastes way to do 'em.
The other cool thing is that it does the state by state mileage breakdown for fuel tax reporting. It's cheaper to do the download version to your pc than to order a CD - but if you don't have high speed access - you should order the CD. -
could have gotten more information out of a rock, typed in city and state and it just sits there , so I went out side and got a rock and wa la it does the same thing not worth the $59
JohnBoy Thanks this. -

Woah. Wish I would have seen this thread right when it started. Route Tools is another product we sell and support. Here's the scoop:
- Route Tools is a laptop or desktop computer truck routing program made by Rand McNally.
- It does NOT provide dock-to-dock directions.
- It does NOT connect to a GPS receiver to provide positional information.
- It DOES provide city-to-city, town-to-town, or zip-to-zip route directions using the national STAA trucking roads as well as Rand's truck map data.
- It DOES allow for multi-stop trips easily which helps optimize your decision for fuel costs.
- It DOES have an extensive database of truckstops which can be "turned on or off" when doing a route such that you would see the exit number location of each major truck stop along the route that you plugged in.
- It DOES have an optional monthly fuel price subscription option (for $9.95) that will also plug in the current fuel prices at those truck stops as well.
Why we carry this product and where we find it to be useful???
1. For IFTA fuel tax reporting. It gives a mileage-by-state breakdown which can be used as a reference to get roughly the miles for the quarterly fuel tax forms. This is, of course, an "unofficial" method as the fuel tax authority wants the exact miles driven from the odometer or an authorized electronic tracking device. However, there are many times that the driver doesn't log some of their miles and you need SOMETHING to recreate those trips so that you can survive an audit. Since it does the state-by-state breakdown you can save a ton of time over using an "online" free map program to figure out how many miles were driver per state. (For the lawyers out there - Dieselboss, Inc ONLY recommends using approved mileage calculation methods for the IFTA authority.)
2. For truck stop location and rest areas. It allows you to filter the fuel stops on the route. Many companies and independents use only particular truck stops chains. You can click only the particular chain (T/A's, Pilots, etc.) that you want to see along the route to easily provide your drivers or yourself exact fuel choices for that trip. You can also filter by a particular amenity (like on their TND GPS product.) Rest areas are also included if your turn them on.
3. Printable. Unlike the CoPilot truck product (which will also give you the state-by-state mileage - only from dock-to-dock too) the Route Tools has nice print options for your records. Example: print the trip summary, or the miles by state report, or the entire route turn by turn summary, or all of the above so that you have a paper record of ours or your drivers trips.
I attached a bunch of screenshots to this post.
I did try to run the same route on a rock outside but only succeeded in getting wet. It's raining here in Oregon at the moment (go figure huh?) Not sure what issue smokie is having, but if you got it from us, please call and we'll get'er fixed up for you.
Hope this takes all the mystery out of the Rand Route Tools program for everyone now. It comes on CD or instant download for $79.95. It's not a heavily marketed product, so now the folks at this forum are pretty much the most familiar with exactly what it does now.
