The unit has failed. A known common problem.

If you are still in the time you can return it, then that would be your best option. The only other option is to have the unit serviced by the company.

The charging cables are cheap and fail often. When you say the red light isn't on, do you mean the light on the head of the charger? If that's the case either the fuse inside the charging head is blown, or your lighter outlet isn't working because that light goes on regardless if the other end is plugged into the GPS or not. There is also a little data port on the left side of the GPS unit that a standard cell phone charging cable works on, and the other end you can plug the USB end into your radio and it will charge the GPS unit.

These things need to charge for a while before they will turn on. The internal battery doesn't last long, and if it has been sitting turned off for a few days, you'll need to charge it up before it will come on. I found this out the hard way. Once working, they work good. I've owned mine 2 years without any problems.

The hardware sucks, but I like their software much better than Garmin or other manufacturers out there. The extended warranty is worth the investment.

 

That's strange that a charger on a brand new unit wouldn't be working. Who was the seller on Amazon, a private company or Rand McNally? Sounds like you got a defective or maybe a unit that was already returned by somebody else. Send it back for a refund and buy another one at a truck stop that you can test before leaving the place.
