"When are you coming back to install it?"
"But 'THEY' said you'd take it inside".
And of course....
"I talked to your supervisor. He said it's okay. "![]()

I had a home delivery to a home based business. Culdesack in nice neighborhood. I stopped in front of the right address, only to meet the beach from hell running down her driveway, screaming at me to get my blankety blank truck away from her home! I finally got her calmed down enough to understand that this was supposed to be a "dock pick up." Of course there was no indication of that, either on the freight, or the paperwork.
This broad cussed me up one side and down the other, then called the office and chewed out everyone she talked to. Made threats that she was going to get a lawyer and sue our company...
She pissed off our dock manager to the point that he marked the freight "refused," and shipped it out on the next linehaul to leave the terminal.
So this broad's husband showed up the next day to pick up his freight. Dock manager looked at him and very innocently remarked that their must be a mix up somewhere, as his wife refused the freight, and it had already been sent out to be returned to the shipper.
There was an even better outcome to this though. Somehow the city found out these folks were running a business in a residential only neighborhood, and to make it even sweeter, they did not have the necessary business license.
Yes, sometimes you just have to know there is a God!

I know one MD county that is VERY hard on that sort of thing.
I encountered one such allegedly female who was just as not nice, and thought she'd be slick by putting her business as the delivery address so she wouldn't have to pay extra charges.
After I had to listen to the attitude, a call was made to the county by yours truly.p. I never had to deliver to that woman's house again.
Karma isn't nice sometimes.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
How about the inbound dock manager who give you that 900 lbs residential skid with no liftgate? So you complain and he says: "You don't need a liftgate! There's 10 boxes on that skid you can break it down and wheel it off the back of the truck." Yeah OK. 7 boxes weigh 25 lbs each and the other 3 weigh 250 lbs.
Or like the other day I had a huge Toro commercial-grade mower in a wooden crate. Appointment was set for later in the day but the dock loaded it towards the back of my trailer. Regular skids couldn't fit around it, so all the livelong day I had to move this monstrosity around to get deliveries off and pickups on. -

So question for you LTL guys. How likely is it for a P/D driver to gross around 70-80k? Im looking at OD.
-
It would be easier on linehaul. P&D you would have to work about 53 hours a week, every week, assuming $25/hour, to gross 70,000
herring22 Thanks this. -
i dont think i could do linehaul unless i had to once in awhile. city is much more my cup of tea. Im considering switching to LTL. I work chicago local for a mega now, gross 75-80k, but no benefits at all besides basic health insurance, no sick days, vacation, holiday pay, nothing. Been thinking LTL might be for me.
-
It is easier to get that kind of money at (formerly) Con-way, because they pay overtime after 8 in a day and also work on the dock. I know one of their P&D guys who grossed a bit over $80k last year. I have heard great things about O.D., but they have that pesky no overtime until 60 hrs problem. The good thing is that they get plenty of hours. Of course it depends on the freight levels and varies from terminal to terminal. What terminal are you near? I assume Ohio, but are you in Columbus?
-
Im in Chicago now, but if I try and get in OD, im probably going to go for the Indianapolis terminal. Last I heard business is booming there. So Im thinking i should get good hours there and stay busy. Plus its in the middle of family in Ohio and Kentucky.
