    there seems to be a couple flatbed companies up in the area. im about 200 miles north of detroit. it wouldnt be to hard to say finish paying off the truck im working towards now and then afterwords sign it on to a company up here that runs covered wagons or roll tarps or flatbed. or even just run on my own with say landstar or my own authority and ill be close enough to detroit and other steel cities i will have plenty of work without having to deadhead to far. i have been looking and looking and looking for a place in an area to live where i can get home and get out with a flatbed without an hassle and for a good price but not in the middle of the city and this seems to be my favorite area so far thats affordable. living in arizona it has always been a pain to get home and a pain to get out even as a company driver, i figure i will either have to switch to reefer if i wanna contiue to live in arizona or move somewhere where theres better flatbed freight and im gravitating more towards finding a different place to live.

    That’s really not a big deal, and even less of a big deal since you’re a regular carrier. The hub I run to has those types of gates at the entrance and exit, but even though it can be opened by scanning your ID badge, traffic would quickly back up to the street during the busiest parts of the night if each driver stopped.

    I wish I’d taken pictures of some of the easy loads I had at US Foods. Not to say that it’s an easy job, but you can have easy days, and it’s even possible to get lucky and have them often. Going back through my pics, and it’s mostly ####ed up loads and outside shots of the truck.

    I had to be careful on Tuesdays to not open my trailer in front of the other guys, because I’d have a 28’ with 2-3 empty pallet spaces. Someone saw it once and asked where the rest of it was.

    I’ve done flatbed for a few years, started out doing it actually.

    Now, just like what we do, there’s different levels in the flatbed sector. The ones the haul building materials a.k.a sticks and bricks generally have the easiest time. Easy to secure, so just strap it down and roll. Unfortunately they also tend to be the lowest paid.

    Then you have the more specialized areas like what @OLDSKOOLERnWV and @kylefitzy do. This tends to pay better, but it also usually involves loads that don’t secure as easily and require tarping.

    I’ve done the sticks and bricks, construction loads, and a little heavy equipment and parts. Truth be told I’d still be doing it if the money were there. Unfortunately it wasn’t....

    My dad did glass, steel coils, and other various building equipment and materials.

    I wouldn't say the money was crazy, but he certainly did alright for himself. He's in management now, and says I make him absolutely sick with how overpaid I am.
