My A/C doesnt work..I had bought parts (compressor/clutch and rec-dry) and so on and was planning on doing that this weekend, but a buddy canceled on me. So I called the local KW dealer Friday around NOON.
Asked when I could drop it off...told me right away and they would work on it 2nd shift. So I did.
No call Friday night. Hmm. Ok, maybe Sat am? nope. No call.
Drove over there 11am Sat. See it in the 'finished' lot. Hmm. Wander into service and was told "yup its all done...".
When I asked him why no one called me, at least this AM..I got this look:
..He said he was sorry and all, but they did fix it. Found NO freon in the system and 2 super leaky shrader valves and a bad seal on the front of the compressor. They replaced all of the parts ..vacuumed and recharged the system and stated "tested to 40f" - all ok at this time.
I pay my $458 bill and walk out back.
Get in my rig. Noticed someone moved my seat ALL the way back and the steering wheel so far up/forward it looks like a Greyhound Bus. As I moved the seat back, somehow <?> I ripped my leg and it started to puke blood into my sock. Nice....Roll the sock up enough to cover the gash and fired the truck up. Flipped on the A/C. Waited. Waited...Waited some more.
Hmm. Put on the fast idle. Wait. Waited...
Hmm. It actually seems to be blowing HOTTER air than outside.
NO A/C at all. WTF ?!
So I go back into the service department and give him the same look he just gave me:
..meanwhile, the rig sits there until someone gets around to it on Monday.
Ideally someone should have checked it again this AM to make sure it was still holding a charge, which it SEEMS it is not.
Why people cant just fix something RIGHT the FIRST time is beyond me. This was my very first visit to this service department and so far I am not overly impressed. I have every indication they will take care of me (and my wallet) but the lack of a call and now an inconvenience is really annoying.

sounds like my local freightliner dealer here in Mattawan, MI...
-
There is very little quality services anymore. On rare occasion, there is the exception, but...
I no longer believe in who is going to do the best job, it is who you do want to be f'ed by....
.
I ordered a new air tank from local KW dealer. Found the part # on the KW website. Called dealer, he said not reliable numbers so he looks it up by VIN number. He claims 4 different tanks so i give him the number.. he describes tank as exactly like the one i have...
Tank comes with two new brackets... wrong brackets. This was week and a half ago. Parts man said you will have correct brackets wensday, delivered. Friday i call looking for them. Dealer said they would UPS them that day. If im lucky, i will have them monday or tuesday. WTF...
Just another example of why i say, who do you want to get f'ed by...
If i do find a company that does a great job for me i am loyal to them like a dog. I dont care if it costs me a few extra bucks.
Rant off now...

This is why I do it myself!

They charge $100+ an hour and try to get the jobs done quicker than book time says it should take. They half ### it and if they happen to notice something else that might need fixing not related to your problem they wont even bother to mention that to you. They are all ripoffs. You need to find a good a/c man that has an evac machine and will make sure everything is checked and done right. Yeah I know.. Good luck with that.

Doing it myself, but need the parts to do it with...

I've found this to be true for years. My best friend who's no longer with us used to sum it up pretty good, he'd have his truck washed on the way home and when we would talk on the phone I would ask if they did a good job? He'd reply "good enough to where I can finish it when I get home".
-
sorry for the loss of your friend puncher. He sounds like a good guy...
-
Thats the way I used to think. I got tired of wasting the money so I just do it at home most of the time. It takes all day, but its done my way and its clean!
Sorry for your loss. -
I don't have anything positive to say, but you should think about this experience every time you get something worked on. There are some things that aren't as immediately obvious as a/c not working that are much more important. Case in point, I had a lot of work done on my trailer a couple months back which included new s-cam bushing and brakes all the way around. The front axle was good, the back axle they left the brakes backed all the way off and they hadn't been greased. I used to worry about offending people when I double checked their work, but I've finally learned that even the best mechanics make mistakes, and when it's on your equipment, it's your responsibility and your money.
On leaving trucks with a big dealer where you have multiple shifts working on your truck, I've found that you have to keep on top of them to get any communication. I had some work done at MHC KW in Memphis recently, which was supposed to include running the overhead. I was sitting outside watching the whole time because I had my dog with me, so I saw that the first shift guy didn't do it, and when the second shift guy came in, he just started putting the valve covers back on. I asked if they had decided to just not do the overhead and got "First shift did it." I told him if that was the case I would have put the valve covers back on myself in the two hours I'd spent outside in the 90 degree heat while I waited on him to clock in. So now I'm just ranting too..Don't overdo it, but don't be afraid to be the jerk that demands customer service either.
