Rates are crashing and fuel to the moon!

I wouldn't say that at all. I've learned some very valuable information from you just following along with your business and the info you share

 

If I had a choice between a spreadsheet that effectively does nothing for my business except make numbers a little easier to work with, or twenty years of trucking experience, I'm ditching the spreadsheet.

The only boss I have is the guy I look at in the mirror every day, and thanks to his hard work throughout the years is why I'm in the position, I'm in today.

Plenty of trucking companies that have nearly exclusively contract freight have gone out of business in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Just because someone has contract freight doesn't mean it's "more" money which, in a lot of cases it's not. Especially with a one truck show.

I was leased on to TMC at one point in time, they have tons of contract freight that is basically as you put it "click and ship the scraps of the market"... Cheap, 48k, 8 foot tarp lumber loads that no one else wants, even on the spot market. But hey, "it's high and mighty contract freight"

Plenty of Owner Operators have gone a full career working the spot market and thriving off it, way more than someone with "special" direct shippers could ever dream of, and that's even if they have direct shippers. Lots of truckers like to tell big tall fairy tales, even on the internet to make them feel superior to others, for some odd reason.

All of us ,here, do the same thing. Spin our wheels for income. We just go about it on different routes.
2 of us could run identical freight with identical equipment and still have different price points.

I primarily run off load boards. Plenty of work that pays well. May not be published every day. Many times I have to call the broker to get the better paying jobs.
Sometimes I sit home a couple extra days waiting to line up a good round trip.
The work is available.

If I had to give my best guess, Yes. I’m sure it’s close to that. The 15% we’re often told is BS. Right now they’re making at least 35%. They’re cashing in on contracts that have fuel surcharges built in, not passing it along.

 

Can't blame them for getting everything they can right now if morons are willing to agree to it. Many of us would and did for the last two years.

 

I know my area like the back of my hand and the stuff that's on the board is the same crap that's been there for years and it's never paid well so I don't expect that to change.

What's missing in my area is actual freight that truly needs moved. Well, it's not there. The volume is completely absent and this is not normal for open deck this time of year around here. The freight has dried up.

The million dollar question is; when will it return? It's all about playing the waiting game now.
