The northeast's problem is the number of loads going in far exceeds the number of loads coming out. Supply and demand.
Get a great rate up. And search like hell for a good rate out. I'm quite content when I get $2/mi out on reefer freight. Sometimes I'll do short hops where I can clear a lot per day with very little driving. This time, I got $1000 for 500 loaded miles. Not ecstatic over it. But, it turns a profit.
If someone doesn't understand why a certain area has cheap freight ,then they've underpriced themselves on the trip there.
Rates are picking up...

Yes I was also wondering where at in MI?
Midland has that big DOW plant, and there is some freight in Bay City, some in Saginaw, and then there are the sugar beet plants in the thumb area.
Heck, I even got a load up to Traverse City once, and only had to deadhead 80 miles to reload. -
I dont think one load marks a market trend.
If it's a Sunday load, just means a Friday truck never should for a Monday delivery.
And you were in the right spot at the right time with the right equipment.
And got lucky -
I was thinking about why, and I believe that it's more about hard work than blind luck. Since the beginning of the year, we've been pulling down rates that are 40+% higher than what's being posted for the lanes that we're running. We have to sit, watch and wait for many of those loads a little longer than most would be comfortable with sitting still. We also make ourselves available and take broker calls over the weekend, something that most aren't keen on doing. We turn down cheap rates, and rarely deviate from our first quote for the load. And we have occasional loads with premium rates, or with fair rates going into hot markets that we get from brokers before they hit the load board. They call us first because they know there's a good chance that we're in the area to load it, and they need to ensure that it gets delivered on time without any hassles or problems.
So for us, there's a trend of increased rates. Whether that translates into increased rates across the board, I can't say. But I can post our experiences and let others compare their own with what we've been seeing. -
And january/february, I got great rates too.
Others I talk to got junk rates.
March, isn't showing as strong yet, even with a reefer. -

So 2.00 a mile from Virginia to Texas into a major lane with a guarantee load out in Texas is bad?
Oh, 1.85 a mile out of Florida to Virginia got me here, will not gross above 55,000 pounds either. -
windsmith Thanks this.
