...but what happens when you get down there and have to sit & wait for 5 or more days until they remove enough debris for you to get close enough to the dock to bump it? Then, because you've been sitting there all of that time idling so your AC can keep you cool, you've got to fill up at that truck stop that had a foot of water in the lot during the storm surge and the tanks have more water than fuel in them...and because they still don't have power, they are running on generators just to be open, but that all costs money so that fuel/water mix you're pumping is running you $3+ per gallon and will probably cause you more problems down the road with fuel filters and other contamination issues. Suddenly that $4/mile rate doesn't look so good, does it?

Nobody is sitting there waiting for five days. That didn't even happen with Harvey this time. They got the water trucks in and out pretty efficiently as documented by the members of this forum. I do agree that going to FL without some kind of detention language on the RC is pretty dumb though. Doesn't hurt to be safe.

$4 a mile down to Florida right now is a really stupid booking on a van or reefer from just about anywhere right now.

Finding FL Reefers for <3 bucks a mile out of West Texas. That is admittedly the same total dollar amount we're paying out of IN. Also West Texas is still West Texas for Reefers.

4 bucks a mile ain't going to be the problem. Trouble is most citrus ( estimates between 30 to 60 % ) is lost due to wind blowing the oranges off the trees, and then some trees were damaged. Normally. around November 1, there are hundreds of loads of citrus sent North to markets every week. Not going to be many loads out of Bikini this fall. Produce had not been planted yet, so no losses there.
But there will be way less loads this fall for those hands who haul fresh fruit.

I had an agent call me today. She says I have a great paying load for you. Memphis to Miami - 2.80 mile. I said no thanks, she says why, I say you are at least 2.00 mile short on that one. She hung up on me....LOL
