I must have missed something... I thought when a company was in business it was to make a profit. Profit really isn't a dirty word. When a company makes a profit we as employees all do. We make a wage, feed our families, have benefits, a vacation, a style of life. If it's not the wage we want or need, its our choice to make changes.

Usually flats have loads got a friend that never seems to have trouble securing a load but then has the clearance to run for the government.

I can't say I'm having any trouble securing good paying loads but then I run a reefer. I run under my own authority have my own client base and loads are readily available especially when someone decides to quit and leave their load sitting on a dock! :biggrin_25512:

I might be the only one on this forum but gosh I hope not. Fuel surchase should never figure anything. Shouldn't base the pay rate per mile, nor your profit....it's a bonus check so to speak. What did you all do when there wasn't a fuel surcharge? You have to make it without it. My bonus check goes into the truck account but it's never figured into anything for the business or myself. :biggrin_25525:

I am reading the posts on this forum thats why I have responded with what I consider comments of intelligence. Many, many companies are just hanging on, many are closing their doors, many companies are just plain broke and dont want to shut down because they value their employees. There are a lot of factors that have made this happen. Not all companies that are profitable are greedy or working their people for "slave wages". Let me ask you a question, how long does a driver or anyone for that matter stay at a company when they aren't making enough to make ends meet?

Sorry I havent been back to update. I agree with alot of yall the freight is down becauseto many truck and not enough loads. I would love to take my truck and park it but I was running last year untill august making money and the rates droped a bit and fuel was raging and I had a hell of a fight with a factoring company and just decided to wait out the higher fuel cost well that didnt work out so well we were running 21 days at a time last spring and fuel was high but truck was avaraging well above 2 bucks a mile including dh we had quite a bit of money built up and thought we could ride it out well now money is running low and im having to run just to pay the bills rates are very crapy now lucky if the truck avarages 1.25 now and these rates are out of some of the best spots in the country I wouldnt dare to go to tx or fl or anywhere in the west right now I seen alot of stuff out of Fl paying way less then a buck a mile today. I hope this thing gets better soon. I really dont see how a guy making payments and spliting money on a lease can make it right now. I had a fuel line that got a pin hole in it the other day in a blizard ran about 500miles @30 mph before finding it and lost about 1/2 tank when all was said and done then the repair cost that load might have just broke even or worse. I feel like im just stealing from my truck running at these rates but cant find any other options and my family has to eat. We spend alot of time keeping the truck loaded I have it booked up untill tue. of next week now and I try to find the best loads availble in a area but theres nothing paying now and if you find a buck50 a mile it will be going to a sht hole thats going to eat u up coming out. I said the other day I took extra good care of my equipment when the money was good so im banking that it will take care of me through these tough times. Thanks guys and the best of luck to you.

I too have my own authority and had a good costomer base running granite but like I said the economy took care of that. I was making good money on the brokered loads before the loads tanked but I see alot of really cheap loads around a dollar per mile getting gone really quick I wont take anything that cheap but like I said when my truck is running theres somebody looking for the best loads we can find way in advance and still end up laying over sometimes due to the lack of loads. I use to let the brokers call me now they dont need too I had a pretty good deal hauling steel direct from the customer but the loads got thiner and thiner and they sent me a email saying they were knocking off for the holidays about a month ago and havent heard from them since.
