Uhhhhh, okay........never been in a truckstop either, have ya?

I quit trucking when my son was 3.
Moved into my mother-in-law's, went to mechanic school for two years while cutting meat part time, then got on with the transit authority for 8 1/2 years of fixing buses in TWO DIFFERENT toxic, politicized shops.

TL/DR.... There are worse jobs, you may have done them. Enjoy the learning process, but keep your feet on the ground and your head outta the clouds about this industry.

Some local gigs are nothing more than using your house as a sleeper.

I'm regional, out 7 to 12 days. Our son is in college, and the missus is an ex-trucker, so she knows how it goes.

If you miss the milestones with your 3 yo and the new baby, you will have regrets.

However, "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do", so good luck to you. I hope you can make it work.

The first time you have to explain to your kid that you can't go to his ball game because you'll be gone trucking and he looks up at you with those big sad eyes and says "Gee, that's okay Dad, I understand," you'll feel like a lot of us have felt. And you'll hate yourself.

I just started my 15k requirement with my driver trainer, yesterday.

Millis Transfer has been excellent, so far, and their employees speak highly of them.

I'm going OTR because of the pay.

But if you've chosen Millis, then congratulations, they're an excellent company.

    Thank you for your insight.
To give you a lil background, I worked my entire 20s in customer service jobs in food service, call center, specialty food service (Starbucks) and towards the end of my 20s in EMS(Emergency Medical Services) working a standard 24 on 48 off (sometimes more as needed)

In my 30s I’ve worked in retail sales and service

all jobs I’ve ever had, weekends and evenings were never a guarantee. Holidays, birthdays and any date of remote significance were not given to me unless requested, even then they were occasionally denied.

the only real time off I’ve ever experienced is when life events occurred (birth of my son or when I needed to take over sole care while wife was away)

I see the potential time away as a small graduated step of what I’ve been used to. I’m definitely not coming into this as someone that enjoys the comfort of 9-5 or a static schedule.

I do want to be compensated fairly for my time and like any other job, I want to spend what time I can with those I work so hard for.

the industry itself is prone to foregoing the latter, I’m aware. That’s why I’ve chosen Millis not only as employer, but also because of my experience(or lack of.)

any time away, within reason, is expected as I get into this profession/ industry.

    homeskillet and HaglerFan Thank this.
