Just kinda funny, because somebody with a stable 100% perfect work history and a current job, wouldn't really want to go drive a truck seems like lol.

Not everybody who drives truck is a low life. I started driving at 21 I knew when I was 16 I wanted to drive and I had stable work history up until I went to trucking school.

The law says that you need 10 years of work history. (look that up on the csa site) In my case I only had 3 years and and I was in high school. That was good enough. Now when I go to an orientation. I can put down my last 10 years of work history.

Some companies are not interested in hiring job hoppers so they look at your most recent experience. Some of the companies who I worked for 10 years ago no longer exist or was bought out by another company. If you say I didn't want to work for 3 years. They can say well we don't want to hire you.

Trucking companies also know that people get burned out in this industry and take time away. So when they come back they don't have to pay them on their previous years experience, but there most recent, and if there hasn't been any in a year. They can pay you rookie wages. Win win for the companies as I see it.

But there is a law and companies have been fined for not checking job references. So I don't think its an insurance thing as much as I thing its a DOT thing.

Very true, now every thing about you is just one button push away on their computers and the services they use. They just punch a button and can bring up your whole work history, social security earnings reported from employers, tax records, and even how many times a day you brush your teeth. Just put down you were taking time off, no crime to that. Companies that give "Free" cdl training or pay you during training most likely won't take you if you have a large employment gap - I would say Prime, Roehl, for sure won't take you into their training program if you have big gaps I heard they automatically toss applications if it shows 6 months of unemployment for whatever reason. But I've read posts on here from people who have been out of work for 2 years and got hired no problem, companies like CR England, PAM, Swift, and others will take you usually with employment gaps if everything else is ok. It can also depend on how many drivers they need at the moment, if they need a lot of people, they may relax their standards now and then.

Fair enough, although it is a shame.

This is getting closer to the root of my question, thanks.

Well put, driving a truck does NOT make a person a low life. Some of the most courteous and decent people are truck drivers. The truck driving profession reminds me of my days when I was in the U.S. Navy, as a young man, many years ago. The people come from ALL WALKS OF LIFE.

What is the fine or penalty for a trucking company not checking an applicant's job history or references?

What it comes down to is that both the D.O.T. and the trucking companies want applicants and currently employed truck drivers to be physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and socially responsible and stable individuals. Also, the D.O.T. and the trucking companies also want the applicants and currently employed truck drivers to be alcohol and drug free.

Thanks for doing the leg work by finding and posting that. It further answered my question but the answer isn’t the same one that I came out of this thread with before. That paragraph states that the previous 10 years needs to be documented and accounted for. What I didn’t see was that it is against the law to hire somebody that has been unemployed, which was my original question. Seems like it’s up to the company and not the feds with that one. Thanks.
