I was a local dry van driver for a couple years and made a swap to OTR when I turned 21, 6 months ago. The local job I had didn't pay well, but it was experience. I've been running OTR dry van, 4 weeks out, 4 days home for the last 6 months. It's not bad, and I'm at a company that pays well, so I don't feel like I'm slaving away. I'm just reaching burn out and boredom with the dry van life. I stay out long enough that I feel like a stranger when I come home for 4 days, but by the time I start to 'feel at home' on day 3 or so, it's already almost time to get back in the truck. I'm not miserable, broke, or in a rush to make a change, it's just something that's been building up more every month.
I have a clean record and near a couple big cities so finding something home more often wouldn't be hard, but it's also a trade off. I like the adventure of being on the road and wouldn't want to be home every night. The downside is that home weekly jobs are either just home for a 34 or would be a fairly noticeable pay cut for 2 full days home. I've contemplated going to ATS or TMC and learning the flat bed life, since it seems like it would have a little more variety and be more mentally rewarding while on the road. I've contemplated reefer at a larger carrier that'll bring on a 21 year old. I might lose a little on the cents per mile side of things, but they seem to get more consistent coast-to-coast type runs, which are the runs that truly make OTR enjoyable for me. I've also considered tanker. It seems to be a niche thing and that experience could translate well into home daily positions down the line.
Anyone with more experience have any thoughts? Is this a grass is always greener situation I'm in?
