Check YouTube. There are a bunch of backing vids by various people. Watching one or more might just help you. I did and what I glean from it is this: It's like real estate...location, location, location.

I don't know how they are teaching you in Millington but the guys in San Antonio told us to straight line back until the tandems are at the front of a truck (cone) that you want to park next too. Then you turn wheel all the way to the left to jackknife truck to trailer, then turn all the way to the right and back up until you can see if you are centered. Then they had us pull up and straighten out.

I've learned it is all about the set-up (location, location, location) whether it's going down the freeway, turning, backing or the 90* alley dock you will probably never use after your DMV road test. (If you have enough room to do it you have more than enough room to do the far easier snake turn set-up docking.) 90* alley dock will teach you that, yes, you can pivot a trailer on the tandems and yes, you need room to turn the tractor out of the jackknife and get the trailer aligned so you can straight back/curve it into the hole.
Here's one of the videos DenaliDad mentioned:

Ok, so the 90 alley docked kicked my arse all day..gary the instructor finally came over and reminded me how to drive a truck and after that I got it down, he can come off a little harsh when he's instructing you, but I think he's a big softee underneath, the instructors really know their stuff but they don't hold your hand, and the expect you to listen and learn..I. don't know how they do it..they have the patience of saints..lol..we got out a couple hours early tonight and we get to sleep in till about 7am tomorrow, this whole week has been a blur..I feel like I've gone for a ride in the washing machine..next week is night shift on the range..I'm pretty nervouse about that, since I didn't get a chance to do offsets today the first time will be in the dark

Td to it..and of course its suppose to be 60oday we were in the classroom again, it was long and not very eventfull, took a very easy test on Log books and HOS rules, and then did some map reading stuff while the instructor went over our logs with us...starting tomorrow we go on night shift, I cant say im looking forward to it, of course its suppose to be 60 and sunny all week during the day but 33degrees at night while we are out there, I suppose it doesnt matter much, just gives us more incentive to keep our butts up in a truck..i want to get my 90 and offset by wednesday and try and test out...this week has gone by very fast its been one long blur, and I have to say I havent been this sore and tired in a long time..This place is definitaly not a walk in the part, but I will make it..it has been a learning experiance for sure.
