I have a 07 Freightliner Columbia with a Carrier Gen4 Proheat in it.
Radiator leaking in the lower right hand corner. Have to change it along with the hoses to it
Knox...That noise that you're hearing to me sounds like your generator is starting to shell out. These have undersized bearings in it and are notorious for failure. You lose all AC and Heating because of no voltage to it. I've had them shred a belt (lock up) right before I have to replace it. Spendy as well....think about $700 or so for a rebuilt generator or $1500 for a new one.
I really don't suspect the alternator. Typically when they go bad you will have the apu start and run for only a few seconds before it shuts off. This is a lack of 'feed' from the alternator.
Hope this helps. I've been jacking with mine for over 2 yrs. Lots of things you can do yourself if you have the parts and the time. Once you take off the top and bottom covers you can get at most everything you need to. (only about 10 bolts I think).

My husband has a Carrier Proheat Gen4 on his truck. It seems that the fan wont come on and the HVAC is off and he cant seem to get the HVAC indicator light in the top right hand corner of the control box to say "on". can any one tell me how he can get the heat and fan to turn on? He's freezing his tail off and of course there are no manuels in the truck. He inhereted it this way. Thank You

I have an '07 Freightliner Columbia with a Gen4 Proheat also. Been on there since it was new but I have only owned the truck for 2 yrs now. I have replaced numerous belts (especially the generator...shreads them every 4 months or so - probably an alignment issue). Replaced alternator. Replaced the radiator due to it leaking. I have done all of it myself. Make it easy on yourself and take off the entire outer APU housing. (Only about 8-10 bolts I think).

Do you have a manual? I have attached the manual (including trouble shooting guide) and the parts list. Just be careful on the part numbers as some of them have been 'superceded' to a new number.

Mine will fry you out in the winter and cools good on a 90 degree day. I currently have a 'plugged' evaporator but when I replace that it will probably cool better. (Next summer for sure).

One more thing....remember that this is a diesel engine running in a completely enclosed environment. That means to me that the soot build up is nuts in that compartment. Every time I clean my engine I clean my APU. Seems to help the electronics. Just be careful not to blow a whole in your radiator with the high pressure.

Hope this helps. Just take your time. If it's 'over your head'...get help.

I was going to say bearings as well. However what I did as a deaf person is grab a number two pencil point down touching the engine over say the valve cover. If one is tapping I'll find the exact one that's tapping.

Fortunately belts are easy, if they have more than three cracks on the inside rib to the inch of length it's bad.

It is way back in 2011 for sure. Im pretty sure they are either no longer being made or some other model is superior in use. I am however blown away by the 10,000 hour figure. That's a year and half of 24/7 operation. Most of my small engines do not live that long. I had a 20 horse Kohler burn up after approximately 3 hours twice a month for 10 years. Or 40 hours a year give or take. 400 total. *Shrugs.
