Trans Am. And this is just here because I need 10 characters for a reply.

I work local not OTR but this year i'm only looking at about 35k after taxes. If I put in more OT (already do a good deal) I could bring that up quite a bit the other drivers at my company are around 45-50k.

So you can drive 11, and the other three is not spent eating and at rest stops and such? But you dont get paid for it?
Are you telling me you work 14 hours a day 7 days a week and only make about 800 dollars a week? THatr would only work out to 8 dollars an hour, not counting the fact that you get no overtime. That can't be right, that's the same you get paid with no skills or training working at Mcdonalds. -
legally.. you can not work 14 hours a day 7 days a week... DOT says you can only work 70hours in a week... but...

I work 8-12 hours a day, varies by my route that day. Get paid hourly for the day no matter what I am doing, eating lunch or getting my truck repaired or sitting on my butt somewhere. Company doesn't really monitor us too much. There have been a few days where I have worked 14 hours unfortunately. I gross about $800 and bring home $625. Than I have a $150 in bonus pay for safety+profit sharing extra on top of my $625.
I work Monday - Friday. Weekends off. Usually from 3:00am to 1:00-3:00pm. Just some info for any of you guys wanting to go local. Its not as bad as it sounds. And I worked at McDonalds when I was a kid and I brought home about $130 a week.

so is it unfair of me to expect to bring home $600 a week as a new driver???

Hey there.
Crete starts its students out at $600 a week. That's their student pay. I don't know what they pay people with less than a year experience. But 1st year experience pays 41 cents a mile. I have talked to crete drivers and they are averaging 2700-2800 miles doing regional work.
AT 2700 miles X $0.41 /mile = $ 1107 Gross per week
add $41 for every 100 miles after that.
On September 1st 2007, all Crete drivers get a $0.03 raise.
AT 2700 miles X $0.44 /mile = $1188 Gross per week
Now add what they pay for a full coverage Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan for you and your family and you get about 10000 a year benefit. Your pay out for that benefit over the year is 3200 or so. Or think of it this way for your health insurance... Family plan is 270 a month your pocket (pre tax income); they pay out 840 a month out of their pocket.
If you don't have a family to support... they health care cost are like 15 bucks a week or something. Minimal expense, huge gain.
Add to that profit sharing... retirement... ect.. and you have quite a different package than some of these posts would leave you to believe.
Sell yourself man. Go to the best companies and talk to them polite and get the good job. You can do it!
