Hello guys. New member here. Although not a trucker, have been in the transportation industry for the last 20 plus years. My aunt and uncle were team drivers back before deregulation. My background is in mechanics, both automotive and heavy truck/diesel/locomotive. Currently employed as a locomotive engineer in the Boston area. Enrolled at a local CDL School, 540 hour course. Live in southern New Hampshire.
Looking into truck driving because things are not getting any better at the railroad, although you could say that about the trucking industry too I guess. Been dealing with job loses and pay cuts for the entire 20 years.
The northeast (America in general) is not the manufacturing center it once was. Dwindling car loads. I thought my current job/company would last me till retirement. With the pandemic the company really came down hard on cut backs.
Why trucking? I think it's time to try something new. I want to be my own boss. Trucking is the closest thing to the railroad. I've always been a introvert so the alone time is fine. I want to see the country. Wife hates to drive. Flies everywhere. I always enjoyed driving. Family in Michigan and Texas. If I do start my own carrier, it would be nice to leave something (family business?) to my kids. From what I can see once you pay your dues the money could be limitless. Naive????
If I do pass my skills test (gpa 4.0 in the classroom) and go through with this I"m looking at Schneider to get my foot in the door. They seem like the best out of the other big carriers. Swift, Prime, etc. Plus there local. Terminal in Shrewsbury, Ma. I know the first year will be tough, and I will take a pay cut, but I'm willing to take that risk to be happy again. Always been a hard worker and go getter. Would like to write my own pay check again.
The people on Youtube with there own authorities are they really doing that good financially. 10k plus a week? I've been listening to a lot of podcast from Blue Ribbon Logistics on Youtube and those guys seem to know how to get it done.
Looking for advice. Thank you for reading.
    Matt

Decent plan, but keep shopping around for a carrier to work for after school.
Become a member of www.OOIDA.com since you're thinking about becoming an owner-operator in the future.
OOIDA is a business website for the owner-operator and small fleet owner.
    Do you live near Shrewsbury?

You listed Swift as one you're considering. In that case look at Swift Refrigerated. Probably make more money than with Swift dry van.

I would stay exactly where you are or use your experience in mechanics to leverage it into a good shop.

trucking future for small operators may be not as well as many make it out as. We are looking at a green new deal/hostile government that may gut the industry with the big players being left because they can absorb the costs.

If you’re only getting into trucking with the hopes of going O/O maybe reconsider I was company for almost 3yrs before making the leap and the market is great right now but in 1-2yrs when you’re ready who the knows what the market will look like and if being company is not what you want and you won’t be happy the everyday bs truckers have to go through will drive you crazy and wear you down before you know it.
