A lot of good advice guys. Thank you. I still don't know what I want to do. I wouldn't mind doing haz mat tankers. I need periodic background checks for the railroad so I'm clean in that respect. My driving record is spotless.
It's the whole we need drivers, but nothing less than 2 years experience. I already accepted that I may have to be a company driver for a year or two. At least I'll get driving experience. Out of time. Will post more later.
    Thanks again.

Just information for you. If you decide to not be an O/O.
I’ve been through 6 companies in 3 years. So many have the attitude you can sacrifice your cdl to the company. People go as far as lying to create violations on you.
Now... I responded to a humble little add on Craigslist. Dry van, 54 cents a mile, no benefits.
My last three paychecks. They’re kinda laxed on miles. But dry van. I’m not killing myself Iike reefer madness. Haven’t had an all night driving with this company. Anyways... these last three weeks laxed. I figured. Based on 48 weeks driving. From those three. I would make $92k this year. I very well could top $100k for the year. And I’m not killing myself with reefer madness.
Edit... they wanted at least 3 years experience. Needed... I’ve delivered in downtown Boston. Delivered on Hollywood Blvd. This job is fun!

My neighbor made $65k last year driving oversize on a rgn for a small company. Home every weekend. off most of November and all of December.

No reefer madness, no sitting for hours and hours and hours to get loaded or unloaded. No paying lumpers, Doesn’t even drive after dark.

I can just imagine his reaction of the crane operator demanded $75 or $250 or whatever to unload the cargo.

“it’s your F’n cargo, you bought it , and you paid me to bring it to you, and if you want it off my truck before I leave , you better get to unloading it ! “

For whatever it's worth, there's quite a few van and reefer loads that require hazmat and/or tanker. You still need the endorsements, and the company will need the permits and the customers. Some have more than others. I've pulled countless tanker loads but never actually pulled a tank.

whenever im hooking up to a trailer i think of railroad guys hooking up to train cars, it is similar and like everything its what you make of it, when i do my pre trip i think of pilots pre tripping an airplane, again its what you make of it and what your goals are. may sound nutty but i do whatever it takes to get ahead, whether its mental or physical.

there are owner ops who have less than some company drivers, but there are some that have more, so again its what you make of it and where your priorities lie in life, some people have more money, some have more time to themselves, some have both and some have none.

i believe this, "how you do anything is how you do everything". if you can make and save money in the railroad you will do it with anything you do, if you cant then you probably wont. obviously there are exceptions to any rule.

Yes, stay on the RR, you got the Union and health plans, and RR Retirement which is 2X payout what SS is !,, just transfer into Car Repair of MOW guys, they will find something. How much seniority you got there ? it will not exist on trucks unless you work for a Union co. and since you would be new, you would be at the bottom of the seniority there.
