When my front drive went on my last truck. I was climbing a small hill in Medifine Hat just leaving a stop light. At around 25 mph I felt a small give in the rear, which turned out to be a bearing letting go. Then as I got up to about 35 mph I could hear a lot of whining noise from out back that varied with the speed. Luckily just a half mile ahead and a block to the left was the local Western Star dealer, so I rolled it into there. Furthering my luck, they had three empty bays and mechanics that had just finished other work. They rolled me in and within 24 hrs I had a whole new diff and on my way.
There were a lot of bearings that were just lying around in there. So that's why you don't pull super b trains (140,000 lbs) off highway with 40,000 lb rears.

    Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.

Yup. If I was buying a truck for work it'd have 46k rears even if it didn't need them. Way better resale value out West.

    Dave_in_AZ and uncleal13 Thank this.
