well, it would have to be self powered and wireless, with a range of at least 70 ft. In addition, unless you pull the same trailer all the time, it would have to be portable/magnetic to swap from trailer to trailer. Since it would have to be mounted at the top of the trailer, what happens in the winter when the lens gets covered with snow?
In all fairness though, I was contemplating this idea for the back of my cab, I had to back under a trailer in the dark at an angle recently, probably stopped, got out and checked my king pin/5th wheel alignment 4 times. A camera would have probably been a little more helpful, would have only had to get out and check once, then used the camera and "feel".

Trash trucks have em, cant be that hard to do... but i dont see the point, all tbe hassle of set up exccc, for 30 seconds of backing. Id rather goal, nobodys gonna care when you say, "well i didnt see it on the screen."
-
I saw a video, and perhaps one of you saw the same one, that had a tractor without mirrors. Instead, there were iPad sized screens mounted on the inside of both the driver and passenger side.... Don't know if they are customizable for multiple cameras or angles.

Maybe you could ask the president to borrow a drone while you back up?
street beater Thanks this. -
All of the side loader trucks have them at a place I worked.. They worked good too, nice color monitors that automatically came on as soon as you put the truck in reverse- or you could turn them on manually… You know what? Complete waste.. The only thing I ever used it for was to check to make sure my hand truck was still there as I was driving down the road.. I don't know anyone that found them useful for anything else either..
They were a good thought though, and definitely not cheap.. -
Just a heads up check out the RV sites as a LOT of motorhomes have them als have them for the trailer behind the mtorhome.
Also as an aside, dont know if anyone else had seen t but DTNA just petitned the Feds to use side view cameras onproduction trucks and do away wth mirrors, all n the name f fuel mileage and aer numbers magie, that will take some getting use to! -
We have them on our trucks since people like to swoop in behind trucks at station's here in southern ca a lot love it. Big monitor in truck color and sound, cool tool and I emphasise a tool doesn't replace GOAL.

I don't think it was intended to do that, just give better eyes on traffic behind as we move forward. A camera mounted at the license plate position can see more of what is behind you than the mirrors on the side.

Ours are mounted at highest point on the tanker not bumper level

Cali kid Thanks this.
