Rebar dunnage set up.

I never thought of it till I started hauling long pipe on a dolly and gut rapped every row of pipe, it was a pain standing on a ladder trying to push straps between rows of pipes. lol

 

I use straps on a lot of steel, but not rough stuff like rebar. It all depends on what it is.

 

Reber don't hurt straps.

Much easier then dragging chains.

 

I prefer chains. I don’t mind the extra work. Keeps the heart pumping. Burns calories, less stomach gut. Even though I’m local, doing the extra work and breaking out in a sweat is good for ya. Get the cardio in, “No gym dues required”

 

Were there gaps between the bundles of rebar? You know they might load 2 or three bundles, leave a gap, load a few more and leave another gap? They do it so they can unload with a crane and have enough room to feed the sling between the bundles.

When there are gaps between anything there isn't much you can do. when the load wants to move the tiedowns arent going to stop it, the bundles will just slide together because there are gaps and all the tiedowns will become loose. belly straps are the same way, they are just cosmetic when there are gaps in the load.

People say you can "lace/weave" your straps through a load like that. throw the strap over one bundle, under the next, and over the next and so on. then throw another strap from the other side and do the same thing so it is on the opposite side, over the top where the previous strap was under. so each bundle or group has strap touching it.
Not a fan of that myself, not enough pressure to do anything really

really, you need to strap each bundle/group individually. But with a load like that, nobody has enough straps or winches.

 

Does rebar pay anything or is it like lumber.... cheap/heavy?

 

Prolly depends who you do it for, like anything else.

and it's so rare they load it correctly (no gaps, same height)

so the big problem IME with rebar is the bundles in the middle really have no downforce on them. the outside two bundles have a ton of downforce on them, but the other ones are really just being touched by the side (hopefully) of the ones next to them.

Take some trash dunnage (it's a rebar place there will be plenty around) and put some lengthways on the bundles in the middle and throw a strap over that one. So now that bundle has at least one strap pushing DOWN on it. repeat for all the middle bundles. The outsides are still touched but now at least all the middle ones have at least one on it.
