Then I got the 2 oil pump parts, elbow, and valve thing from the Dealership. DD Parts, along with a DD reman head. So another $2400. DD reman Bull gear, another $800.

Oh yeah, I’ve heard of all of them. HPP in Mi. Is another. Chances are they’re all good. I just wonder who’s doing the Manufacturing for them. I’d rather stick with a Major Manufacturer. For instance, Federal Mogul does stuff for the Military. So I know their Technology is proven, and because I’m from Detroit, and Detroit Diesels here. FP ( Federal Mogul) Diesels here. I felt confident with them. I had to order it from Houston, to get the best price, go figure. Lol. M&D was very easy to deal with, free shipping.

I did my due diligence and their manufacturing company is in Georgia

My mechanic did mention that the gasket set was a better quality than some of the others. The kit also came with new head bolt washers, unlike other kits.

That warranty sounds like a sham also. If the warranty isn't good Nationwide through some sort of network, it's not work the Charmin you wipe your ### with unless your local.
Heads are a crap shoot. Even OEM is rebuilding the deck surface and recutting. You can not buy a new head, at least you couldn't.
Liner height is the biggest killer. Check the liner height before you remove the old liners, then sink the new ones dry without the o-rings and clamp them down and check them. Anything close to zero is a fail. You want to be .003 to .004 above.RubyEagle, Vampire and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
If you want a runner. Drop the compression down to 15:1, change the cam, turbo, ecm program and get on.
Pai parts in my opinion are junk. I've heard more bad then good about them. I have a buddy that's a journeyman at Detroit diesel and has always told me to shy away from aftermarket. He's always said that he sees them always fail prematurely.
Keep in mind also that OEM parts are made to OEM specs. Just cause it's made by mahle or FM or clevite doesn't mean it's the same. In fact I deliver a big machine to clevite where they make pistons for GM, the guy helping unload said we have a line for GM, and a line for Clevite, same applications, different specs.
Piston rings can slobber excess oil if they are not clocked right. Oil gets through the openings of the ring and can get by the piston.
Personally, I spend the coin and go OEM. At times going cheaper isn't always the best route. My opinion of course.RubyEagle, Vampire, Speed_Drums and 2 others Thank this. -
