Wow!! A couple of my pistons had Very small marks where valves had hit pistons. Mechanic said he’d never seen that before. I wondered if it was caused by overspending, since I’d done that a few times. Detroit Engineer on-site that did my counterbores, said it was probably from excessively worn valve guides. I had already returned the old head core, so we don’t know for sure. I had 1.2-1.3 mil on the previous inframe. It had all OEM parts, 2 counterbores done. Work was done at a small shop in Arkansas.
I don’t know what I’d trust, after seeing that. I wonder how Fitzgerald kits are on bull gears. Hate to overhaul it and have it go bad.
The one thing the Engineer Guy said was that they see a lot of aftermarket heads, that are milled too much. Apparently they study the core returns, heads, and bearings. That’s why they charge a core deposit, on bearings, while aftermarket doesn’t. There’s also another bearing size, so depending on the engine. Same kit different bearings. Aftermarket kits come with bearings, but have different kit#s. That’s how I understood it anyways. One aftermarket Guy said they never sell the kits with the other sized bearings.
the only reason i bought this trucks is because its a glider and has 290.000 and i got it somewhat cheap.I knew it would require a full rebuild with decent parts as fitzgerald are known for using the cheapest parts ever. piston looks like teflon coated and have no brand name, sleeves look cheap and no brand also...camshaft has almost no wear at all but didn't see part number or brand on it...lol... i will check the bull gear and everything else this week... by the way: engine has a full tilt coated manifold and a BW 171702 turbo 1.45 AR...
my cylinder head looks like crap too...probably aftermarket lol...still have to check the block, rods are the old stile , 15:1 pistons etc... im a cat guy and i know nothing about detroits...as a matter of fact i hated all trucks i drove that were detroit powered, they all were slow and no guts...depending on the condition on the block i may swap the engine for a 3406e, called kustom harness and they make a wiring harness for columbias that are plug and play for $3850. engine serial number is 06R0332035 , probably 97 i guess... probably no holes for oil nozzles...if someone can shed some ligth on what can be done to this engine i would appreciate.!
Something missing on that engine serial#. The premium b and p blocks have the oil tubes. You probably already know, blocks cast after May 98 have been drilled. There’s a cutoff number, don’t know what it is, below not drilled, above the # drilled. I recently found out they have drilled rods available. So that’s not a problem. Not sure, but they may only be for the 16.5 pistons with snap ring wrist pins. I forget who posted the #s or where. They’re on ttr here somewhere. There’s a lot of info on here about Detroit’s. The parts are so cheap compared to a Cat, you should consider keeping the Detroit. Especially since you got a deal on the Truck. Moneymaker vs, Moneytaker Lol. Save the Cat for a nice Pete or KW.
My mistake, your #s good. I have a similar # on valve cover sticker. It’s listed as a unit#. The # I was thinking of is listed as a model#.
