Its not bad, you just have to decide to be meticulous. You need a 25+ ton press to get the front 3 gears off the counter shaft. The other thing is marking the correct teeth, correctly for the timing of both front and rear counter shafts. The service manual is correct when it says that you need an extra race to install the front counter shaft bearing, it goes much easier. When I did this one, I spent more time cleaning than anything. The only 2 parts that didnt go through my parts washer were the main case and bell housing. Those 2 parts were washed with the pressure washer. Its not a terrible job, just nice to know exactly how it works.

When I had mine out I tuned the input shaft by hand in OD and then direct and you could definitely feel how much harder it is to turn in OD. That's true what they say about better mpg running in direct vs OD.

How much was the rebuild kit?

I take it you had to but some new gears also, how much extra were those?

What kind of time did it take to rebuild just the case?

I used all fuller parts. The basic overhaul kit was $600. The gears I needed were $890 shipped. It took about 8 hours total. It took me longer because that was not the only thing I was doing at that time. You need a 25ton+ press to press the first three gears off of the counter shafts together. I detail cleaned every part I could. The part that let me down was the "Made in China" stamped on the bearings in the genuine Fuller rebuild kit. Next time it will cost half the price when I use aftermarket parts form China without the "fuller" price tag.

There is a little problem with Rockwell in that they don't sell kits, and parts have to be ordered in multiples, a clever way to keep the rebuilding at the remanufacturing level from the way it appeared to me. Keeps someone from ordering just enough parts to do one transmission.

I ran a bunch of 9 and 10 speed Meritors and I liked them better than the Eatons to drive, until I got this one with a DD15 in front of it.

I got a remanned Eaton in a previous truck when a cooling line rubbed through and ate it up inside. The Meritor reman was a better rebuild,IMO, although it was very tight when I first got it back.

You liked the Meritors? Every one I ever drove felt like the gearshift was stuck in a bucket of bolts compared to how slick the Eatons feel.
