well before i bought the one i have i checked the sidewalls and the point where the cap is put togeather and it wasnt dry rotted, tires have a date from a year ago stamped in the side (fthe virgin date). I just dont wanna be somewhere and have a blowout, or the tread peel off in the middle of nowhere. Had a blowout in DC 2 days ago, loaded drove to brandywine MD then philly, then back to baltimore then went back to the TA after the toll and got it changed to the recap for $50, and i limped all that distance on a Virgin tire, it was sagging like a mofo but it didnt blow. And those who want to crucify me for driving a distance like that, I went to 3 tire shops, the first guy said, all my tires were bad, including the 2 Virgin front tires and they needed to be changed all at once or he wouldnt change the one. The 2nd shop said that they dont put a recap on a rim and the 3rd said he only will do the tire if i buy one from him for $380. I cant be in this situation again.

sucks when you have shops that think your at there mercy so they can rob you blind. not very good customer service to milk your customers.

Caps are only illegal on the steers if you are driving a bus. In a freight hauling truck, you can run caps legally in ANY position. Regrooved tires cannot be used on the steer axle, though...unless you're driving a hotshot pickup with tires rated below 4,920#.
§ 393.75 Tires.
(d) No bus shall be operated with regrooved, recapped or retreaded tires on the front wheels.
(e) A regrooved tire with a load-carrying capacity equal to or greater than 2,232 kg (4,920 pounds) shall not be used on the front wheels of any truck or truck tractor. -
I am very aware of that Sir lol. i WONT run recaps on the steers, never never never never never. i dont care how legal they are. I dont wanna have that "what if it isnt capped right" question. thats why i have 2 new virgins on the front. And yeah they tried to rob me, really sad because all the shops i went to were foreigners, all combined they didn't look like they ever drove in their life. they see a big tire and i guess they see big money

since we're all much higher then that number. caps are illegal on steers. no if's and's or but's. -
Do you know the difference between a recapped tire and a regrooved tire? The 4920# weight rating has no bearing on a recapped tire...only on a regrooved tire. If you are driving a truck hauling freight, a recapped tire is perfectly legal in any position.25(2)+2 Thanks this.

No one I have worked for has put recaps on for steer axle tires, but that doesn't mean that they are illegal, according to the regulations I have read, however many drivers will tell you that it is illegal and some will refuse to run a truck they think might have caps on the steers.
Like I said, I have never seen it, and also a repaired puncture tire is not sold for steering applications.
I have gotten a few used virgin tires to replace trailer tires, that way.
I won't say caps are always good, either, but I think a company was putting the many times capped tires on the drives of trucks they were trading off, and that is why the next people to run them had more trouble than they should have.
We did have too many sidewalls blowing out on the 2008s we used to run, but replacing the drives with new sets of caps seems to have solved it, we only have one of them left, though.truckman29801 Thanks this. -
My personal experience. Retreads 25% failure rate. Separated and blew or just blew. Virgin tires 0% failure rate. No separations and no blow outs. I've had the retreads on the drive axle. Two of the eight failed. Put some on the trailer. One blew and one was separating and I returned it.

just cant take the chance of rounding a sharp curve and a recap/retread blows or peels. "when i get to heaven, ill see 70 virgin tires awaiting me"

If you're worried about it blowing when you go around a curve then you are going too fast to begin with.
