INSURANCE, INSURANCE, INSURANCE:
That's what drives the trucking world
Every insurance carrier has different 'qualifiers' with some being more severe than others.
After DUI the HOT tickets that can lead to a suspension from the FCMSA [Leaving the scene, reckless, speeding 15 over, etc.] tend to get the bigest focus in the listed prohibitors on many isnurance guidelines.
Most only look back 3 - 5 years though I have seen some that were very structured.
Like No DUI back 10 years and they split moving violations into Major and Minor with no major back 5 years and no minor back 3 years coupled to no more than 2 at fault accidents within 5 years.
I only experienced that strict, and long of a timeframe guidelines from one company.
Many cariers go by your MVR and check previous employers but some; like Ridgeline do a little more to insure the background of the applicant meets a higher standard.
Often the larger companies tend, in some fashion, to do more and a clean MVR with a serious offense in past history will be acceptable to those who don't make the weed connection.
A lot of violations will always yield more scrutiny.,
Everyone needs to remember, with the Clearing house up to speed you only have to blot your copybook one time to, realistically, end your career as a CDL driver.
Stay clean.Last edited: Dec 21, 2023

If it has been at least 3 years then I think you should be ok. You gotta slow down if you want longevity in this industry. Going too fast in a semi can have very devastating results.
The question is, when exactly was the charge? If you go get your CDL, apply to any and everyone and only answer the question that's asked. Don't volunteer any unnecessary info. If it asks have you had a moving violation in the last 3 years, count back 3 years from the day you apply and answer appropriately. Don't talk too much. If Western Express is willing to take you, jump on it and hit the road. You can do well in flatbed division. You'll travel all 48 and you'll stay busy with them. Just use them to get some experience, it's as good as anywhere to get started. I broke in with them and did fine there. It doesn't really matter where you go, it's a good chance you won't break the bank your first year. Gotta gain some experience. I will say however, what you gain out of trucking is based on what you put in it.Crude Truckin', Recklessbuthopeful and Chinatown Thank this. -

Well, if Western Express won't hire you, you could always try 'Crazy Igor' or "Punjabi Bobby' for a 1099 gig, probably on a Freightliner that already has 1 million+ miles on it.....
